Been thinking of doing this for a while now. Looking to go on a walking/hitching tour of europe. Western mainly at first as I wouldnt expect to get too much covered. Planning it as a 3/4 month trip walking when applicable and getting proper transport when i need to.

    Any advice, caveats etc?

France has prided itself on it's way-marked GR walking routes for decades. I know other countries in Western Europe have long-distance routes, providing maps, rec. accommodation, rec. attractions. For the most part Camping should be permitted in national areas with occasionally restrictions. I have noticed that Military land and National recreational land tend to be side-by-side.
By following the way-marked routes a walker should reduce the amount of time they need for preparation. Just that they are aware of the topology, judge their speed for that terrain and bring clothing and gear to suit.

For a first-time long distance walker it may be an idea to keep it to maybe 2 months on the first visit and either hang around a place and continue on again later. Or fly out and fly back again starting another leg of the journey.

Cheers for the info, very helpful.

The bolded bit is pretty much what i was planning anyway, see how far i could get without rushing the cities and take it from there.
