am based in north co. dublin and looking for advice on getting a site for 2 hives. mainly is it a case of finding a suitable location and then go knocking on doors or is there another approach?

Coillte forestry will give sites to beekeepers for a nominal fee

I have discovered a small hive of bumble bees by my back door. Would anyone want it as I'm concerned about them being so close to the door.

If you have Bumble Bees then firstly they are no use to bee keepers and secondly there is really no risk from a bumble bee nest if you just ignore it. They will die out once the first frosts come. If you have a reason to remove it to another location then contact bee keepers Ireland and one of them may move it for a small fee. These are a creature at great risk right now so a nest is very important. I generally just live with them if they are in the garden.

Besides a windswept offshore rocky island a Coillte forestry would be the last place I'd look to put a hive.

Bumble bees are beautiful creature. I'm no expert on them, but have Great yellow bumblebees on my farm.

You are right in thinking the trees provide no nectar, but most forests have a few hives hidden somewhere near the edge in a small open glade. Sheltered from wind, the bees can then set off to cover any adjacent heather covered mountains and/or meadows.

I moved the hive at night to a quiet sheltered corner of the garden. The hive is in a nesting box so it was a simple job to move them. They're getting on fine and the colony appears to be larger with more coming and going than what we saw when they where by the doorway.
