just wondering the real cost of learing to drive as when i work it out its fairly expensive just to try and get my full lincense i dont need a car but with strict laws about driving alone on a provisinal i want to have the full lincense for when i need to drive when finished school june 2014
    does this seem real
    car 2k
    insureANCE 2k
    tax and nct 1k
    petrol/diesel 500 for about 3000 miles
so 5500 just to learn to drive excluding lessons etc

You can cut 1K off the car if you get a 1L micra, insurance could be right if you are a bloke with no history, tax and nct is unlikely to be 1k for that kind of car, more like under €500. petrol about right (unlikely to get a diesel for €1-2k).

4K I have. Don't forget service and tyres though (about €500 worst case). Min # of lessons (12) will cost you about €300-400.

So in total, at a min., I would say just under €5k to get to a full license.

I don't believe it costs that much if you just wanted to learn how to drive could you not just pay an instructor for all the lessons you needed? and you could then be a named driver on your parents care until you can afford your own.

    car 2k mine was €800
    insureANCE 2k mine was €1500
tax and nct 1k mine was 300 fo rthe year +nct €50
petrol/diesel 500 for about 3000 miles depends on how you drive
so 5500 just to learn to drive excluding lessons etconly if you buy your own car

car-€0 learn in your instructors car
insurance €0 you will be on your instructors insurance
    0 tax 0 nct
    0 petrol
    Lessons €30ph + 12 edt lessons foe 250-300
say 15-20 lessons on top of the edt. 450-600
    total of around €1000 euro.

you can even get it done in a week all in at places like leinster driving campus

If you are learning there is no need to get your own vehicle. You can simply take lessons for a while until you pass your test. then hire your instructors car for the test.

If money is your only concern that is the cheapest way.

It happens all the time. in the uk it is common for the majority to only take lessons, getting a car after passing.

I recently passed with just lessons getting a car only in the last few weeks and having minimal practice in it.

There is absolutely no need to practice on your own or with an unqualified instructor (friend or family member) just practice with your instructor.
If money is your concern its cheaper to only use the instructors cars.

There are courses available that take you from beginner to passing in a week or so with just lessons.
Crash driving courses like these are commonplace overseas and are available in Ireland too.

You'll get a hell of a lot of lessons with the price your thinking of paying for a car to learn in never, mind tax/insurance/fuel costs.

Aside from the obvious point that you titled your thread 'Cost of Learning' then complained about the strict laws. But added up the cost of owning and running a car. Two very different issues.
Relax you are in 5th year. ( That sounds condescending. But it is a long way off to be stressong about. Cars are easier to afford when you have a full time job. ) It is perfectly possible to pass the test without a car. I help people do it all the time. It is a lot cheaper then owning a car. That said, owning the car has benifits.
You said your parents don't let any on you on the insurance. Perhaps you could share a car with one of your siblings.

the real cost of learning is the cost of lessons. that is all.

the cost of owning and running a car, driving illegally and paying fines is different
