Twitter usage suggestions

I first used twitter during the bombings of the russian underground in 2010. The news stations I was watching didnt know anything, and it was the only source of any true information.

For things happening right now, and for one off events, it is extremely useful as a tool, unfortunately it is misused by the masses.

I don't want to see what you had for your dinner, I don't care about what your daughter said today and I don't care if you thought this article about baseball was interesting.

I used to have a policy of "if you tweet more than 7 times in a day and World War 3 has not started, I unfollow you", because at the end of the day, if the twitter feed is going to be useful, then I am going to read it, and if I am following 50 people, and they are all tweeting more than about 5 times a day, thats a lot to read.

I recently started following an individual who could have valuable information in the future, but between tweets and retweets, he went over my threshold in just 6 hours, and in the course of the day(a sunday) tweeted an enormous, 14 tweets.

For me twitter is a tool, facebook is a social medium, so I don't mind too much about people sharing mundane stuff on Facebook, but I do admit than when someone posts half a dozen youtube videos in a row, I do often unsubscribe from them.

What do other people do with regard to twitter and filtering out all the mundane, boring, or just stupid tweets that usually normal(or useful) people publish?

The issue is that we are all using twitter for different reasons. The way you could use twitter would be to use lists. Have a list for media sources and view the list rather than in the main timeline.

Others may use twitter like a chatroom and could tweet frequently which would seem to annoy you. For me, Twitter is a great tool to chat and get to know people.

A point to note OP - you don;t read all of twitter - you just cath up on what happens to be going on when you log in, trying to read ALL of the tweets you have missed is a futile exercise the more people you follow. As Vahevala has said, use lists for those you find most interesting, you then have a custom feed of tweets from those accounts only.

Personally I use twitter to share information about things that are going on (festivals, gigs, plays) and also news articles. I try not to share something that most people have heard or read about already, i.e. things that are not common knowledge. I follow people that might tweet similar things. Sometimes I might tweet something personal (rarely what I'm having for dinner!).

Basically you can customise Twitter to be whatever you want it to be by following the type of accounts you enjoy. Their content is a lot more important than how many times a day they tweet. Just stop trying to read all of everyone's tweets.
