Hi all, I'm 17 years old and I'm looking to buy my first car. I have my provisional licence. I haven't a clue what kind of a car would suit me. I would greatly appriaciate some help. First of all I'm looking for a cheap car I have a budget of €1000-€1500 I'm not sure what that money would get me but preferably I would be looking for a small car that is cheap on petrol. Also it must be cheap to maintain and no running repairs. I would also be looking for cheap tax and insurance. I would like to be a named driver on my parents insurance if that would be possible. Again I'm not sure how a named insurance policy works, any help would be much appriaciated! Thank you

To be a named driver on your parents policy, you cant be the registered owner of the car. It must be registered in the name of the relevant parent. So, Dad "buys" the car and has it registered in his name. Then he takes out insurance on it, in his name, and names you on the policy as a "named driver". It can work out cheaper, depending on his history, no claims bonus etc. than if you were to take out first time insurance in your own name. But, if you have an accident/claim, it will impact on his insurance and his bonus.

Anything small and cheap, starting with Nissan Micra (not a favourite of mine, but practical) and when you have decided on a specific car, keep checking Donedeal or similar to get an idea of costs, based on year, mileage, condition etc. You will soon see what €1,500 will get you.Get a mechanic if possible to check your potential purchase for you beforehand. Costs a few euro that can save a whole lot.

    Good luck with it.
