Train or fly to Kerry from Dublin

Hey! I'm going down to Killarney for work in the next few weeks and was just curious about the quickest way of getting there.

I see the train runs a bit more regular and takes a little over 3 hours from heuston.

Flights are a little more irregular and flight time seems to be just under an hour but check in time will also have to be factored in.

There is quite a difference in cost too with the train working out at 30e approx return and flying 90e return approx.

How much check in time would I need I allow for flying? I will most likely only have carry on luggage so that will save a bit of time checking in and when I get to Kerry.

I'm thinking that between check in and flying it could be done in 2 hours but with the train then it would take just an hour more and with a 60e saving. Is there anything I'm missing?

In guess I'm just looking to see if anyone has any experience of the two and can help with some pros and cons.

    Thanks.

Over the last 25 days ive flown out from dublin twice and into kerry once back and forth from spain...

Day 1 in dublin took at least 1.30 hours to get through security and where you scan your boarding pass. Dont forget if its with ryanair too you'll have to walk for 15-20 minutes from the far end of the terminal..

I flew into kerry next and walked off the plane and through the terminal to the carpark in less than 2 minutes.. no security or passport check

Returned to alicante from dublin and there was no queue at and dublin was running smoothly..

So it can really hit and miss.
Kerry airport to kilarney is also 30 mins and you would be waiting around for a bus.

id get the train which would end up getting you there faster from the time you leave your house.

Also remember on the train you can get some work done while travelling as there is free wifi coverage.

Factor in the time getting to and from both airports as well for an exact trip time. Farranfore isn't exactly a short stroll from Killarney (You will need to get a rental car, taxi or bus unless you have a lift sorted) whereas the train stops in the town itself. Also, the train service is every 2 hours to and from Kerry so you should have more departure options. Unless you live by Dublin Airport, the train is probably the better option here.

It used to be Ryanair but it's Aer Arann now. Not sure what way they work things in Dublin.

Don't forget that domestic flights use a different security queue at Dublin.

Thanks for all the input. I think the train seems like the safer option.

I would have a lift sorted in Kerry either way and the travel time to the airport won't be much different than to the train station but the unknown factor regarding security in an airport for possibly a maximum time saving of an hour probably means its not worth it.

The price saving and regularity of the train also makes it seem more appealing.

    Thanks again.

OP how are you getting a €30 return train fare to Killarney?? Even booking in advance the cheapest I can get is around the €50 mark.

The amount of false info on here regarding security queues is unreal. Aer Lingus regional operate a fast-track security queue at T1 for domestic flights. I flew to Kerry last month, i turned up 40mins before the flight with just hand luggage and was through security in 2 mins.

As a side note, Aer Lingus Regional will be moving their operations to T2 in Dublin from the start of May according to their Facebook account.

They operate from the old A gates, around a 5 - 7 min walk from security. Passengers are bussed from these gates to the plane. I'm not sure how they're going to operate out of T2 in May though.

    This too shall pass.

I would take the train and there is fastrack security for domestic flights at T1 in DUB and as they will be moving to T2 on Wednesday security won't be a problem.
I'm not sure how they're going to operate out of T2 in May though.

most will walk from Pier B but at certain times a bus will be needed.

1.5 hours seems crazy for T1, even at the height of the tiger before T2 opened, I've never seen a queue that bad.

I am definitely not a Gricer (I'm a line basher) and don't normally go into shivers over motive power but the Edinburgh race was my stone cold favourite Top Gear, ever. Still pondering would I like to have been Captain Slow in the Car cruising up the A1 no doubt with pipe between teeth, or Clarkson shovelling the sh*te out of the tender in Tornado :D

Hammond can keep the motor bike :)

As a regular traveller I have long abandoned going through security in T1 at peak times when travelling with hand luggage only.

Having checked in online I've found it (despite protestations from security staff) far faster to go through security in T2 and walk across to T1 airside. Perfectly permissible and you avoid the hoards of (generally) unprepared passengers flying with Ryanair!

I didn't know you could do that, thanks!

The only reason for going to one terminal or the other is for ground handling purposes, i.e. to check in luggage or if you need to interact with airline staff for whatever reason.

The two terminals are linked by a corridor that easily permits access from one to another.

Given up to half a dozen Aer Lingus flights leave from the 300 gates (the old pier B) each morning it was clear to me that it was an option!

And experience has definitely taught me to avoid T1 security unless it's off peak or if I'm flying business class (and can use the fast track).

I have heard of people flying from Kerry to Dublin and getting the train down which means you don't have to deal with security at Dublin Airport.

Might be an option depending on cost/suitable times i.e. get the train down and fly back up.

But they don't have to "deal" with the security at all. You're through the domestic fast track in under five minutes every time!

Allow up to 7 hours between the Killarney-Heuston trip, the Luas connection, the train from Gorey and whatever time lost in waiting for connections. In truth it will take a lot less.

You may find that a bus to Waterford and train to Killarney Limerick Junction be a shorter run but again the connections may work against you.

Thanks for the tips, wish the trains were better than this. Every one seems to complain about connections.

You may find it quicker to take a bus to Dublin and a train from Heuston.

Is this a myth? DAA service levels require them to process everyone in under 30 mins and only once have I exceeded that time in the queue and only then by no more than five minutes. I suggest anyone who experiences this to complain to the IAA.

Use the National Journey Planner at www.a-b.ie to come up with the best options.

As others have said, a bus/train combination may work better.
