Growing up in the 80's they were always an exotic sight as I'm from the country.Whenever You'd see them with their gear and hairstyles it was like seeing visitors from another planet or something.Nowadays a lot of what constituted the punk image has entered the mainstream such as piercings and You even see footballers with mohicans now.Anyone else have memories of them from back in the day?

I remember the day I had my scooter smashed up by punk rockers in O'Connell Street in Dublin, wellll I'm exagerrating a bit, my vespa got away lightly, my pals scooters came off worse. There's a great book by Gary O'Neill with lots of pics of Dublin's youth and street culture from the 1950's to the 80's. I'm in there somewhere..

I was leafing through old issues of Magill Magazine in the libary a couple years ago and there was an article by Gene Kerrigan circa 1981 about Dublin punks.I'm pretty sure the pic of three lads on the cover was from that.

I remember about '78, coming home through Cornelscourt on the bus. The bus broke down and we all got off to wait for another. One of the passengers was a punk I knew to see. He had the bright red mohican, probably the biggest mohican I ever saw, the safety pin in his nose with the chain from it to his ear, torn leather biker jacket and kilt with bondage chains. He was trying to thumb a lift without success and giving out hell that drivers had no manners and wouldn't give him a lift....

I was one of those mods, I was 'elected' to look after the scooters while the rest of them went off, needless to say I didn't do much when 25 to 30 axe and hammer wielding punks decided to entertain themselves by smashing up our scooters....

Gene Kerrigans piece in McGill told of the calm and cool indifference of the couple of mods there iirc, in reality I was sh*tting myself
