Auto Express Driver Power Survey

Top 10 Cars on the UK/Irish Market following a survey of 46,000 UK and Irish owners covering, reliability, build quality, running costs, performance, brakes, ride quality, handling, practicality, ease of driving and in car tech. The roll of honour for 2013 is.............

    1. Skoda Yeti
    2. Skoda Superb
    3. Jaguar XF
    4. Renault Scenic Mk 3
    5. Mazda CX-5
    6. Skoda Octavia
    7. Alfa Romeo Giulietta
    8. Land Rover Discovery
    9. BMW 3 Series Mk 6
    10. Mercedes E-Class

Not an Audi or VW in sight! which does not surprise me in light of their awful showing in the Warranty Direct engine claims data (1 in 27 Audi engine failures). If you want a good VAG Group product buy a Skoda seems to be the message. Surprised to see a Renault in top 10 they must be improving, pleased to see the Alfa Romeo Giulietta surveying as the 7th best car in the UK market. If Alfa can build reliable cars as well as being stunning they will become compelling to own.

Fair play, had been reading the Mag did not realise results were online already

The fact that there are 3 Skodas in the top 10 and no other VAG cars just goes to show the difference between this customer satisfaction survey and an actual reliability survey.

Absolutely, though is nice to see the Jag scoring well all the same.

Audi and VW in the bottom 10 in the Warranty Direct survey of engine failures featured in a tread a few months back. Their owners are not happy with their cars and the Warranty firms are also not too happy?

Yes I remember that survey from a while back. And yet 3 of the top 10 in the Auto Express survey are Skodas? Are the VAG engines in Skodas somehow more reliable than the same VAG engines in VWs, Seats and Audis?

This survey seems to be based on opinion rather than fact.

If 60% more fncktards buy brand a rather than brand b and partake in the survey one can expect the survey results to be a pile of poo :pac:

Don't understand the point, 46,000 Auto Express readers filled out a survey which threw up these results? Maybe a VW owner has paid more so has higher expectations than a Skoda owner but that does not explain their poor performance in the reliability which is a binary question, the car is reliable or it is not. The Warranty Direct Survey was hard data around engine failures.

Suspect the Skodas doing well may have something to do with not using latest generation VAG engines but using older generation engines with the bugs ironed out

Skoda are not using older generation engines. They are using current platforms with up to date engines and other systems. If you buy a diesel Octavia it is the same engine as you get if you buy the equivalent diesel Golf. There are several reasons why the Octavia owner may legitimately be more satisfied than the Golf owner, but engine reliability is not one of them.

Not so. Reliability is a probability.

........The Warranty Direct Survey was hard data around engine failures.............

And the sample size was ?

Fail or not fail is what is called attribute data, to derive any meaningful info from attribute data one needs to know the sample size, one also needs to know the failure modes as engine failure is fairly generic :)

When the sample size is insufficient one can expect to see variation in the results, an example would be certain cars engines "failing" significantly more than others when the engines are the same.

    Would you agree?

If not please do detail why :)

Only one of Reno in top 10, you not surprise Alfa there?

Relaible as well as stunning, in Irish market they have no presence, not much compelling about that.

~I note mark 6 3 series, not familair with journo using mark for bmw, always e _digit_digit :)

Yes, to be honest I was surprised that the Alfa Romeo Giulietta was deemed the 7th best car in the UK/Irish market, I know Alfa Romeo have improved hugely with the 159, Mito and in particular with the Giulietta but I did not think they has come this far so quickly, ditto Renault who are making serious efforts to improve quality.

Your right about Alfa's presence in the Irish market, its woeful.

The 2 owners must be very happy with them..

    :D:D:D

Not quite, if there were just two owners surveyed and they were both happy the Giulietta would have scored 100% but it only scored 89.10% satisfaction rating:rolleyes:

    Survey is down to perception.

The Yeti was pretty well priced and well speced when it was released.
So relative to expectation its owners are satisfied.

    I'm happy to agree.
18 months of Yeti ownership, its really a terrific car.

I think he's pointing out how weird it is to see it marked as BMW 3 Series MK6 as opposed to BMW E46 or E90 or whatever.

According to the Auto Express survey the Yeti is reliable, has low running costs, easy to drive, superb build quality and the same in car tech as its VAG stablemate the Bentley!! sounds like a seriously good car

Also, has the same AWD system as used by Bugatti & Lamborghini.

So yeah.... its basically a diesel Lamob :P
