Hey, i'm getting braces really soon, and I do Martial Arts. I'm just wondering is it safe to sparr head contact with braces? My sensei told me there are special gum shields which sometimes help, but not always. Just wondering, obviously I will ask the Dentist when I get them.

With the proper gum shield its perfectly fine.

You may want to give yourself a couple of weeks to get used to them.

When I had mine I couldn't eat solid foods for a week because it literally felt like my teeth were gonna break. One time I got a rugby ball in the mouth just after getting them tightened and I was sure I had just lost all my front teeth! Ha.

After a couple of weeks you'll be munching on steaks though! Sparring should be no problem but make sure you have a good gumshield otherwise you lips won't thank you

Thanks for the advice, i'll stay away from sparring for a week or two when I get them, i'm gonna get the special gum-shield so when I do sparr, all my teeth won't fall out ;D.
