Hey guys starting to do a few bits and pieces with cars and just wondering how you guys are getting to the awkward places such as oil filter and sump what are ye using to safely hold the car up?

i had been using the car jack for minor jobs but am scared it would give in so i want to invest in something that is safer and will last. any suggestions much appreciated.:D

If you are only looking to do minor jobs, would Car Ramps be more suitable - no risk of the car falling.
There are limiations to the ramps though!

Just if you decide to get a Trolley Jack, be sure to get axle stands too!

Indeed, never get under the car without at least axle stands. There's been incidents where jacked cars have fallen down and killed the owners.
I have two from Aldi, got them years ago and not a bother.

I prefer stands to ramps as I can also take wheels off for brake work.

Before getting under the car give it a couple pushes (not too hard but y'know whaddamean) when on the stands to make certain it's steady.

Ramps. Hopefully later this year a pit.

As for a trolley jack, we use multiple jacks for different purposes. No one jack for all jobs plus handier to have many.

You have to ask yourself do you need the lift, access or strength?

Thanks lads my title was a bit misleading. as i didn't no exactly what i wanted. i think i am gonna go with what Curran suggested as they will do me just fine. the cars will be golfs and will be just minor work services etc. thanks again:D

The only thing I could add here is that the small 2t trolley jacks don't give me enough clearance for working under a car (ok, so I'm a fat git), so I use a 3t trolley jack, and that way I can support the car with axle stands opened up a few holes.

This is also handy if you're in any way claustrophobic.
