Yellow teeth & brown stains

I have really yellow coloured teeth and they are covered in this thick layer of brown stains on the back of my teeth and in between some of them. It feels really rough to touch with my tongue and I can't get it off no matter what.

I brush really thoroughly once a day, I drink lots of water, but I drink 1 cup of tea every evening, no sugar, but have a few biscuits with it.

Is the discolouring and staining from tea/sugary foods or what? I'm worried about how bad its going to get in the future, seeing as I'm only in my 20's.

I've heard teeth whitening is super-expensive and it restricts your diet greatly. I think I got my teeth cleaned about a year ago during a checkup, the dentist just went over my teeth with this spinning soft brush but it didn't get rid of any stain or colour.

Did you have this staining when you had the last appointment? What did the dentist say about it?
Sounds like tarar (calculus) build-up. A visit with a dental hygienist should improve things.

Dentish to get them cleaned OP, that should be your first port of call.
After that you could look at whitening those choppers up

you can use blue covarine in your toothpaste. it gives an optical illusion which makes your teeth less yellow

Bleaching of teeth is a way to lighten the natural tooth color. There are different ways whiten teeth. During bleaching rails with an impression of the teeth is first made. Then, a carrier rail is made, in which the bleaching is introduced. Then the rails are used and the bleaching gel can act on the teeth.
Here some of other tips for teeth whiten
    Using the Right Toothbrush
    Picking the Right Bristles
Brushing Often Enough or Long Enough
be sure to brush outer and inner tooth surfaces, the chewing surfaces, and your tongue.

First port of call should be a dentist to clean them throughly, when I got mine done last time then did a great job and you should see a big improvement so maybe you need to change dentist.

Brushing with Baking Soda Once a week is the old wives way of keeping them "scum free", honestly never put too much thought into it until I tried it for a week every day when they were badly stained and then once a week afterwards, it made a huge improvement and they feel glassy clean afterwards.

    Also do you smoke ?

+1 to the smoking question. That causes a lot of staining at the back of the teeth and between the teeth.

The acidity level of your own saliva can cause this, but lots of tea, smoking and red wine won't help. But a good cleaning by a good dentist will remove the stains, but they come back...

Heh....only noticed your user name after I'd posted. Smoking has a serious effect. My black stuff has disappeared now.
