Friend of mine came home a couple of weeks ago and has a ticket to go back in a month. Long story short he's not goin back.

Is it possible to sell the ticket? Can't you change the name for a hundred euro or something like that?

Check the terms and conditions of the ticket/airline.

Although all the fares I know of do not allow a name change when the first leg of the ticket has been used already.

In fact if you don't use the first leg you waste the second leg (Hence why a return is usually the same price as one way)
