Should poor people be allowed sell their children ?

Following on from the great success of my "lets go to war" thread another bolt of genius has just occurred to me.

If poor people were allowed sell their children it would raise the standard of living for those remaining.
It would reduce the homes reliance on welfare & there would be one less mouth to feed.
People would be less likely to look down upon such families & appreciate their efforts in bettering their lot.

I'm seeing a lot of pluses & not too many negatives.
Would it not be just a more advanced form of surrogacy ?.

If this is what you consider a bolt of genius, I'd say that any family who bought you as a baby would be feeling a bit short-changed at this point.

    Children? No.
Children's organs? Sure they only need one kidney...

I see a flaw. Nothing like sticking the kids on ebay to win respect off the neighbours!

Next you're going to suggest trading them on the Stock exchange in some convoluted form.

What are they doing having kids in the first place if so poor?

Dean Swift beat you to that idea. In 1729
    A MODEST PROPOSAL

For preventing the children of poor people in Ireland,
from being a burden on their parents or country,
and for making them beneficial to the publick.

    by Dr. Jonathan Swift

....I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy child well nursed, is, at a year old, a most delicious nourishing and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricasie, or a ragoust.

You'd get a bigger water allowance when rates come in too if you purchased a few of these kids.
An extra 10kg bag on Ryanair.

It's the gift that keeps on giving.

You mean she wasn't a reanimated soulless corpse when she was Prime Minister?
