I'm thinking of doing the 160km version of this next weekend, even though I haven't done nearly enough training for it. Anyone do it last year or planning to head down this time?

Unfortunately I'll be away this year but it's a very nice spin, some lovely parts of the country. The route is great apart from the bit that you are on the main road back to Carlow.

I live in Stradbally, which is about 30km from the end. It's going to be very hard to cycle past my front door and up the Windy Gap.

I'm a possible rather than a probable for this depending on how stuff works out for me, really need a few long spins with an eye on the WW200 but just not sure if that Sunday is going to be doable.

Daithi, if I had the Wolftrap and Cut behind me the windy gap wouldn't be the worst sight in front of me, though different if your'e passing home.

It's the passing home that I reckon would be difficult. I go up the Windy Gap at least once a week, but not usually with 130km in the legs!

Daithi, you could always cycle over to Carlow that morning, then you can finish in Stradbally on the way back.

I was thinking about that, but then I'd miss the food at the end! Might still end up doing it that way round.

Didn't make it to Carlow for this this morning but was in the Slieve Blooms, met the peleton from this event on the Cut, (I was the one going the "wrong" way), hard going with the wind up there today, the final few up were feeling the pinch.

Hopefully ye had a tail wind home.

Thanks to all at Carlow CC and the Holy Angels centre for a great day out. Fantastic weather (including a lovely tailwind for the last 50 or so km), a challenging but doable route and lots of food. Thanks to the Marble City dominated peloton for the company on the way round.

Two suggestions: Maybe think about changing the descent off the Wolftrap to the lovely new road surface into Kinnitty. It would add about 6km to the total, but you'd still be only just over the 160km. I'm not sure about heading down the main street in Portlaoise either - we had a good bunch of 12 or so, and it felt a bit hairy.

Overall though a great day out. Looking forward to the next one already!

Just don't tell anyone who 'the final few' were. We were just pacing ourselves and definitely weren't dropped.

The cut is definitely nicer than wolf trap but it's all relative. Next year I intend to keep up with Daithi on those climbs, or maybe not do it, which might be easier.
