You could check out the Garda bikes auction. There's a link in the stolen bikes thread.

Either a hybrid or a road bike would be fine for this. A hybrid will have a more upright riding position, which some prefer for cycling in traffic. A road bike will be lighter, and quicker. One serious consideration is where will the bike be left at work and at home. If you can't keep it in a secure area then avoid buying anything too flashy or you won't have it for long.
If it were me, I would buy a second-hand hybrid, something like a Trek 7.2 and see how you get on. You can easily upgrade to a better hybrid or a road bike if you get the bug. The main extra I would recommend is a luggage rack and panniers. Very cheap in Aldi/Lidl and make cycling to work much more comfortable than carrying a backpack.
I started cycling to work a couple of years ago on a Trek hybrid. Now have 2 road bikes, and a large collection of lycra clothing  It's a slippery slope...

    Get a single speed/fixie for 200-300.

Trouble free, basic and not as attractive to thiefs.

    Adverts full of them.

    Just pick the right gear!

Try Mc Cormack Cycles in Dorset Street. Dublin 1 Just around the corner from Gardiner Street, they usually have a good selection of suitable bikes for commuting.

Gears are always handy and I'd recommend you start off with a Hybrid. Maybe something like this: link ?
