I was hoping for some advice, I work for a theatre company and we are producing a show in July. the director found an image online he wanted to use for the poster and the programme, and in promotional material. I contacted the photographer, who is happy to have us use the image once she is credited etc, but I have no idea how much we should offer to pay her. I have dealt with similar things before, but are there general guidelines? before when using images for publicity, I had known the photographer or the designer so it was easier. don;t want to insult her by offering too little or be silly by offering too much, we are a small not for profit so can't afford to pay loads. i already asked her what she charged and she mailed back and asked what we would be willing to pay so it feels like going round in circles!

Why don't ye both write a figure down on a scrap of paper, exchange, and then meet in the middle...

some good advice here and here via Corkbah on the same thread. As sebphoto says at the bottom of the linked thread, try a search on some of the stock sites for something similar and see how that works out pricewise. Then deal as you see fit. Its great that you have recognised the value of the image in the first place. I'd imagine the photographer asking you to see what you'd offer probably means that they don't get asked very often and when they do they haven't anything ready. I suppose be genuine in your offer and be prepared to walk away should it not be coming to an amicable conclusion.

Good idea, but we have been in touch just by email, she lives in another country, i think this is part of the problem, before when dealing with similar situations we could negotiate in person. I just thought there might be general guidelines
