foam boat ribs

    i dont know a whole lot myself just seen that some boats are being built with foam ribs glassed in the idea being foam wont rot and its easy to bend to shape ill keep looking.

    any ideas what kind of material is used in the ribs of the boat in this picture

    It would have to be a closed cell foam, you might get away with the pink or blue boards you can get in B&Q and the likes but it would be a lot of cutting and shaping to get them to fit right. Another thing you could do is mark out where the ribs are going then using a can of spray foam go along the lines, this will blow up a good bit so do a test run first, when it's set give it a rub with rough sandpaper to shape it and then coat in fiberglass. Be careful not to move the sides of the boat before the fiberglass sets as the foam is very weak on it's own.

    or i was thinking of using some round foam pipe insulation and cutting them in half. or them foam things kids have in the swimming pools

    You won't get the same strength from soft foam it would be like trying to squeeze an egg filled with expanding foam and squeezing one filled with a sponge there will be a big difference :D This is the kind of thing I'm thinking of http://midwestattachments.com/hood.htm

    alright cheers fergal ill have a look see what the sheets are like ive plenty of time on my hands to cut and shape them.where did u get the ss pad eye plates on the back of your boat im looking for some the same size and shape cheers

    I got mine on Ebay I think they are called low profile eye plates you can get standard ones from most marine shops http://www.marineparts.ie/cabinet-and-deck-hardware/deck-hardware/eye-plates/goldenship-eye-plate.html
