3k will get you a very very nice 1.4 Octavia, im putting mine up for sale soon but it's more of a 1k car

Can't comment on the other 2 choices

Get a Yaris. Far more reliable and lighter on petrol than anything you mentioned.

Missus is paying tiny insurance on a yaris so I'm not sure what you mean.

Are they very dear? I showed you a '02 that was NCT'd earlier today and with 6 months tax, within budget. I'd say that's pretty good value. They're not a looker, I agree, but neither is a mk1 Octavia or 206. If you wanted a looker you wouldn't have opened a thread looking for a reliable, frugal car.

As for insurance, they're as cheap as you'll find, and definitely cheaper than the three cars you mentioned. I don't know where you're getting the impression that they're expensive to insure.

look doesnt bother me ha was just saying they arent the best looking and ya im a learner so every single car gives a different quote toyota being at the high end along with ford dont ask me why a 1 litre should be cheap but no a 1. octavia is 300 cheaper

An 02/03 1.4 corolla should be within your budget.

Something like a Ford Focus over the three on your original list.

    For example:

Focus seems a bit too cheap and no mileage listed.
Has more money pit potential than the rest.

Also your man selling it has a good few ads on dungdeal

i would think the almera and corolla look well. Would go for the corolla myself but there it is a lot more expensive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

That's alot of money for that 13 year old Almera. A mate bought a similar one for that sort of money two years ago.

ad says there has been a lot of work done to the car lately so maybe it is in good nick for its age

It's still only worth it's current market value though. I'd be interested to know why they are selling it considering the money they just put into it. Is it a dealer?

that is not strictly true. If i was buying one of two cars with 100K on the clock there are a few things that might be on my mind clutch timing belt ...

If one of the cars had paperwork showing this work was recently done but was a couple of quid more I would go for that one.

I know what you are saying but we are not talking about a couple of quid in the difference here. You can buy a tidy 13 year old Almera for under €1k these days. One that needs a new clutch and timing belt would be worth very little but one that has recently had both done is certainly not worth €1600 imo.
