I bought a 00 english reg gt (red tdi) 150hp golf, i know its really 150hp as i this is my 3rd one of these cars, its 6 speed, heated seats, rain sensors etc, but when i got it vrted, i was charged 380 instead of 460 i thought it was going to be, happy days.

Has anyone thats vrted a car had a similar experience, i logged on to micksgarage site and put in english reg of car in but its still coming up 115hp for parts, (timing belt etc, for 115hp and 150 hp are totally different) a person thinking its really 115hp would be buying different parts for the car:o

The 150 wasnt about untill late 01 afaik. What engine code is on the data sticker? It can be found on the boot beside the spare wheel under the the carpet or on the timing belt cover. 3 letter code like AJM

    It's 115 bhp.

Looks like you have been had.

    150bhp model wasn't out until 2001.

This looks like your one, 99 - 00 GTI TDI 113bhp.

I think the engine code is ARL for the 150.
There should be a sticker in the boot when you lift up the mat, with the engine code and the kw power on it.
    Should be 110 kw

A 00 115bhp would have a factory fitted TDI badge as the old 110 would still have been around badged as TDI
When the older engines were discontinued the 115 was TDI 130 was TDI and 150 was TDI
Lots of people swapped badges and stuck extra badges on these so buying one for a certain power on the badge alone is dangerous!!
Oh and the spec you listed could be got on a 1.4petrol (except the 6speed box)

Each Co2 band has a different minimum. €720 is the minimum for one of the higher bands.

Yes very confusing!! Yup the 115 is a pd.

A decent tuner like http://www.chippedire.com/ will tell you if it has been mapped.

I dont think its possible to chip a pd. Chipping was used on the older ve engines where a chip in the ecu was replaced. Mapping is on pd where the software is changed without physically opening the ecu.

I'd say she's some antichrist to go lad, these look really well with a set of bbs on but personally I like those wheels that are on the RS8

Basically yes but its not a diagnosis machine. They rewrite the software on the ecu. Loads of different things are changed. A decent tuner will draw up a custom map based on your cars condition, age, millage, other modifications, what power you want, economy etc where the lesser tuners will just give you a generic map which will be the same for all models of that engine.

Not any Tom Dick or Harry can do it...

bbs very pricey, it has 5 spoke gti wheels on, ill leave them, had 17s on an o3 red di, nothing but grief, this is faster than the 03 one....my head is wrecked :p

Was the 03 a 6speed? What wheels were they?

Does she boooo like a 110/90?

    No need for this sh1t.
As for buying a mk4 based on badges and engine cover ? Forget about it

yes it was, 3 spoke leather steering wheel, they where 5 spoke wolfrace, paid 550 for them so cheap enough, bad on strotts and bushings, potholes led to 2 blowouts, also when if u over reved in first/second the front wheels would hit the arch expensive feckin tyres! (the front always wear thin fast), 15s are best for tdi

i bought it because of the test drive mostly, that fooled me and i never owned a tdi less than 03, the drive convinced me it was 150.

Whilst part of my post was tongue in cheek, there was a serious part to it. The evry mod is easy to impliment on a TDI of that vintage and thus increases fuelling, more power etc. What I was suggesting was to see if such trickery was implimented on the car in question.

The only way to tell what power it actually has is on a dyno.

There was no need to snap at me

have a fella in mullingar, a russian, he is good im told, work with his missus, ive changed the scabby 4 spoke plastic steering wheel to the 03 leather steering wheel and i have an airbag light error i need him to wipe anyway before nct, but if its remapped anyway which i am positive, will the sneaky russian try and wipe my eye..just throwing it into nct as is to see if it passes, no use spending money if i dont need to

I had 17s on my leon fr (150) and never had a problem with wheels, tyres or any suspension components and I drove on mostly bad back roads. Don't think I even got a puncture in the 3 years I had it.

Were these the wheels you had?

thats them, i never had issues with suspension, but i knew it wasnt right for them, the potholes i hit where monsters in fairness, i claimed 200 euro off fingal county council as one actually buckled the alloy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,088 ✭✭✭sean1141

They are pure dirt of a wheel. Decent 17s will give no bother unless you hit every pothole you see. 225/45R17s would be a factory size tyre for the mk4 platform. Stick with decent brands like bbs (not replica bbs) or factory fitted wheels
