Whiskey Advice

Complete whiskey novice here. Living abroad at the moment and a colleague of mine wants me to pick him up a bottle of Irish whiskey on my next trip home (something you can't get here in Germany). I'll be in the south Dublin area, but since I'm only going to be home for a weekend I don't want to go out of my way. His budget is around €40. Any advice?

I'll throw out a few options.

I'm not sure what's available in Germany and what's not but all of these are within budget or just over.

You can also pick one up in the airport on theway back, good selection there usually.

    http://www.celticwhiskeyshop.com/Bushmills_10_Year_Old_Single_Malt_Irish_Whiskey-z-product-product-102-context-distillery-page-1.htm

Bushmills 10 year old, very nice whiskey but I would assume this would be available in Europe if you went looking but I would think as good as you will get in this price range. €41.99 in Celtic Whiskey Shop.

    http://www.celticwhiskeyshop.com/Jameson_12_Year_Old_Special_Reserve_Irish_Whiskey-z-product-product-73-context-distillery-page-1.htm

12 year old Jameson, another very nice drop but likely to be even more widely available in europe, so probably off your list. €42.99.

    http://www.celticwhiskeyshop.com/Connemara_Irish_Single_Malt-z-product-product-119-context-distillery-page-1.htm

Connemara peated single malt. This is a little bit different as an Irish Whiskey as it is peated which you don't get a lot of in Ireland. It's certainly a bit of an acquired taste but is certainly worth a go as it wouldn't be widely available in Germany I don't think. Ask to taste it if you are in Celtic Whiskey shop (or in the airport for that matter) they should have a bottle for tasting.

    €38.99.

    http://www.celticwhiskeyshop.com/Greenore_8_Year_Old_Single_Grain_Whiskey-z-product-product-29-context-distillery-page-1.htm

    Greenore 8 Year old.

This is a grain whiskey and again there aren't that many Irish Whiskeys like this so it may something a bit different. I'm not a huge fan personally but it could be to your tastes, again taste before buying if you can.

    €36.99.

Hope you find one that suits.

    Are you flying, OP?

Because if you're only home for a weekend I assume you'd be carrying hand luggage and they won't you take any bottles you got groundside past security, limiting you to what's available in the airport.

For something a little different than Jameson which you can get in Germany, how about Redbreast? The 12 year old is 46 in the Celtic Whiskey shop, but it will be cheaper at the airport.

I think you should avoid taking whiskey with you as on airport they will suspend your passport and you will have to face problems in your travelling
so ask him to visit your city and than give him a party.

They won't suspend your passport. Worst case they will confiscate the whiskey.

I've many times put whiskey in my checked bag and it's been fine once packed properly.

Best solution is to just buy at the airport, great selection in Dublin and really helpful staff.

Yeah if your budget can stretch to it Red Breast is a great Whiskey.

Would also recommend Redbreast 12yr old. If you can stretch the budget a bit more Powers John's Lane Release Single Pot Still which is a lovely dram of whiskey. I also really like Lockes 8 Year Old Single Malt which I have seen at the airport in the past.

Definitely Redbreast 12, such a fine whiskey for the price. If they're more into peaty scotch type then Connamara is the way to go.

Devenney's in Dundrum has a decent enough selection, as far as I remember.

Thanks for all the tips, folks. I am indeed flying and I completely forgot that I only have hand luggage. Good to hear there's a decent selection at the airport. :o

If you are flying then just use the daa €10 voucher at the airport.

I picked up a Redbreast 15yr old there last week... Worked out @€;54. They have a load of specials on theloop website and other offers in store that didn't show up online. Had gone in intending to pick up a tyrconnel maderia cask until I saw the Redbreast was on special also! A couple of months the back I'd managed to pick up a powers john lane 12yr old for €30.

Redbreast 12 is a good one, and not so common outside Ireland, but for real Irish, and Dublin, whiskey not available outside Ireland, do yourself a favour and get a bottle of Green Spot. It's available in Dublin duty free and I think it's far superior to Redbreast, but it's a taste thing.

I brought a bottle of Green Spot and a bottle of Redbreast over to a friend in China. He loves the RB, but had never heard of GS. He loved it so much, he ditched the RB over the GS and the bottle was gone over two nights!

It also might be worth trying out Teeling. It's new, in that it's a blend from Teeling's old stock (having previously been in charge of Cooley Distillery, and the famous Tirconnell whiskey). I haven't tried it yet, but have heard good things.

Where can one get Teeling? My dad would get a kick out of that having known John for years.

Edit: Aside from the celtic whiskey store I mean.

Drinkstore will deliver or you could probably phone/email them to ask where to get it near Athlone. http://www.teelingwhiskey.com/home.php?chapter=5
