I have had a couple of helmets and find they sit very high on the head.

Can you get helmets that are more streamline and fit closer to the skull?

Welcome to the club. It's just the shape of your head, you really just need to try as many brands and models as you can, one will fit you better than the rest, it's not really to do with the exterior helmet shape.

There was nothing wrong with the leather/soft helmets worn in the 80s !

I have the same problem - Giro etc sit sorta perched on the top of my head .... reminds me of my Confirmation photo with long hair and a too small cap! :D
I find Bell helmets are far and away the best fit for me but as Dirk Voodoo suggests you've got to try a few different brands! BTW Cycle Superstore usually have a decent range of Bell lids!

Check out Bern helmets, bit of a different style, might be what you're after.
