Draining Turlough

    Lads,

Advice wanted from any of you with experience in drainage. I have a small lake (fed by underground river) on the farm that probably covers 2 acres, but during the wet seasons floods an additional 8 acres. for the last few years there's almost now use from it as the water just lodges for months and months. For the most part there might only be 2 or 3 foot of water on the 8 acres. Itmight eventually run off gradually or evaporate and we get a few weeks use out of it. Have tried to barricade off the lake with earth but it didn't work as it broke in on a few places. Is there any chance that by drilling down a few hundred feet in one of the low spots, like for a well, that it would drain quicker?

    Any ideas appreciated.

Could you siphon off the water to a lower lying surrounding area?
Or - a shot in the dark, but you could get in a water diviner. He could locate any underground water ways. If they are near the surface you could drill down through the ground into them.

Having turloughs ourselves, I don't think there is anything that can be done. Influenced by the water table, so how do you change that? If you find out the answer let me know!

I know what you mean. It's the lowest spot around and I've often wondered it the levels match the water table exactly. It would drive you cracked looking at it every year. Up until 6 years ago you'd get a few months anyway.

Could you set up a local group water scheme from it?:D

Knowing my luck we'd get 6 years of drought :(

    Hi roundbale welcome to boards.

Only way to do it is to lower the watertable, usually involves breaking a lot of expensive rock to get to a water course.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

If it is a real turlough you might be better off following the guidelines here: http://www.client.teagasc.ie/environment/natural_heritage/wildlife_habitats/turloughs/turloughs.asp.
