When to trim the plants

I'm interested in opinions on trimming plants in a freshwater tropical tank.
At first, I would trim away for the overall appearance of the tank, but as I learned about the role plants play with gas exchange, diffusing light, defining territories and enriching the overall environment for the community fish, I added an “air ribbon” and have let the plants grow away.
So at what point should I start trimming?
