Repair or go through insurance?

    Opinions/Advice greatly appreciated!

I had a 4S that I think I damaged by getting sweat where you plug in the charger. Everything is functioning fine except that it seems to think it is plugged into an audio device. The speakers aren't damaged, it just won't play songs out loud or make noises for notifications but it rings fine.

I have insurance with lifeline/CPW for the past 17 months. I have just contacted them and they said it will take up to the 6th of May to get it repaired. I wonder would it be quicker bringing it to a repair shop seeing as I have to pay an excess anyway?

I just want it sorted quick and cheaply as my aunt is using it while she is home in Ireland getting cancer treatment and she uses it to contact her kids in Portugal. She is flying over in about 10 days and wants to have an iphone while there. (I bought an iphone 5 for myself which is currently uninsured!)

Have you tried putting the phone into the hot press it might dry the damage. Something similar like that happened to me and it worked fine

More than likely a software issue if calls sound fine. Have you tried restoring it?

Yes it has been restored to put a restore from my aunt's old iphone onto this phone.

I don't have a hot press! To be honest I was looking for an excuse to buy an iPhone 5 so I didn't stress to much about it at the time but now it is annoying my aunt so I said I would try and sort it.

I found a place that do repairs (http://www.***************/) but they don't show any indication of price without seeing the phone. I would be interested in a ballpark figure to know whether it is worth my while to go through insurance.

I presume the link above has gsm as part of the name. If so stay away, they are cowboys who will hold onto the phone for a few days and charge a fortune. You might get the phone back with something else broken.

Have you tried restoring it and setting it up as a new phone and trying then. The backup could be corrupt

My aunt left it into GSM (before I had a chance to warn her!) and they fixed for her for €55 and she picked it up the next day.

I asked CPW to cancel my insurance now since they won't transfer it onto my new iphone 5.
