Rework stations

So I am getting back into fixing and messing with components and will be going to college (hopefully) in september to continue my degree in electronic engineering. I want to get some practice in and also I have a bunch of dead boards i bought years ago I want to fix.

What do people recommend to go for in terms of a rework station? I hear dark IR is all the rage now but from what I have seen its all so expensive in the 600 + range and then you have to get an underheater aswell!

I used to have something onto this setup: http://bgamods.co.uk/Soldering_Stations/Aoyue_Stations/Aoyue_968-T8280_Combo and it worked well.

Obviously dark IR is better than direct heat but is it worth 2-3 times the price?

What setup do others out there use?
