Hi There. I recently purchased a Specialized Venge Carbon Frame while holidaying in Canada!...... Impulse Buy!!! Anyhow, i bought the frame only and set about buying the groupset (Sram Red 2012). I got a Pressfit BB30 Bottom Bracket with a special spacer kit from Wheels MFG in America as the Bottom Bracket is 46mm as opposed to a regular size. Basically i have all the parts but nobody to fit them for me. I live in KK and had been given a number for a local guy in Thomastown but to no good. I spoke to him twice but he never seemed that interested in the Job and after 3 unanswered phonecalls over the last 2 weeks i've decided to search on HERE! I know there may be lots of guys that would throw their hand at this but being such an expensive "Carbon" bike i'm reluctant on who i get to do the work! So if you have both the skills and equipment i'd love to avail of your services! (for a fee of course!!). I'm willing to travel to your workshop of course, unless it's up north (Past Dublin!) ..... Can anyone help me?????:o

I used to work in Kenny's for bikes in Enniscorthy, Paul Nolan is the owner I'm sure he'd be well able to do it for you, <snip> is his number.

Barry Meehan in worldwide cycles Clonmel would be the man for that job. He's done work for me in the past and its always been a top job. Barry's been a bike mechanic on international teams and is a rider himself so he knows his stuff. Plus they're not too far from you either.

Well i have to go to Clonmel tomorrow so World Wide Cycles might be the place. Just wondering though, do you think they'd mind building a bike with parts that i didn't buy from them?? As mentioned i got the frame in Canada and bought the groupset online from USA, i'd feel like a bit of a cheapskate going in with everything bought elsewhere asking them to build it up? Just wondering what ye're thoughts would be???

You can only ask. Just explain that you got all the parts cheaply abroad.

As an aside, would you not try yourself? It's not that tricky.

I live in Callan and have built my own last year and maintain my SRAM Force Focus with bb30 and so have all the tools. Things like press fit tools, torque wrench, cable cutters, chain whip and cassette lockring tools if you need to borrow or need help. I bought a Lidl bike stand too last year which is invaluable. Send a PM if you like.

Thanks a mill for that kind offer ashleey. The thought of building it myself had crossed my mind buy when i went online the Bottom Bracket seems a bit tricky?? For the bike that it is i'd prefer to know it's on right when tearing down a hill 70klm p/h !

I'll be inn the same position soon. the way I look at it. if there any good they'll have you buying loads of new gear to go with the new bike. who can resist. shiny new stuff.

Same here, another month and will have my parts but surely no shop is going to refuse the 100 pricetag a build will be?

Park Tools have a good YouTube channel that show you the basics. It's just the bottom bracket i'm worried about tbh, there seems o be a large special type clamp for fitting the pressfit and i'm sure the Torque Wrench will need to be digital because of the Carbon Frame. I'm really not too sure so that's why i think it's best to leave it to the Pro's hereworkshop-how-to-service-bb30-press-fit-bottom-brackets-29544

You just need the press fit tool here:
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=36370

and then a hand held 'squeezing' clamp from Woodies to press the tool against the bearings and into the frame. Just be patient and ensure they go in square.

I've ridden the 3 bikes I've built at full speed. Make sure your brakes are centred so that the blocks hit each rim left and right at the same time otherwise the rim will go out of centre relative to the hub when you brake and you'll go left or right!

You don't need a digital torque wrench but a good BBB one from CRC, for example will do. A Ritchey Torque key is useful as it will tighten seat clamps and stem bolts to 6nm and is cheap and accurate.

Pre grease all your bolts and use carbon paste on a carbon seat post into the seat tube and off you go.

The trickiest thing in the whole build is threading cables (use good sharp cable cutters) and adjusting derailleurs. The Park tools site gives all the steps though.

One tip for cutting cables, put the cable into the jaws of the cutters, place cutters with cable still inbetween jaws on to a solid surface and hit cutters one swift sharp blow with a hammer. Nice clean cut every time, works with outer casing too.

So, I had to go to Cork today and with a child like enthusiasm I packed all of my components and frame into the car! Yesterday I had emailed World Wide Cycles based on the advice I was given here, this was email reply I received, promptly to be fair

"We can indeed build your bike for you. Our normal fee is €150 for a full build with external cable routing and €200 for a full build with internal cable routing.

    Thanks,

    Barry "

Anyway, I left my meeting in Cork early and prob broke a couple of speed limits as I just learned from their website that they close at 5:30pm (I had presumed 6:00 wrongly!!) I made it to the shop for 5:29pm ;) ... Only to be told, "Sorry actually, we can't help you" by a different chap behind the counter. He didn't even look at the bike, just basically said that from past experience its not a good idea??? I didn't know what to say! I just had to leave, fair enough hd didn't want to do it, it's his choice but to email me the above back same day and then leave me drive out of my way to be told this, I was fuming. He had all day today to email me! ..... Ill finish by saying that I'm not slating World Wide Cycles as a bicycle shop ( to be fair I didn't buy anything there) also I have a number of close friends/relatives in both triathlon and cycle clubs that only have good things to say about them, I even sent my own nephew up there last weekend to buy new shoes and cleats for €200 and I'm sure he'll be a customer for life there as a close relative of the late Tony Ryan "Ryaner" from Carrick on Suir so he's destined for great things hopefully :) ... But I hardly see myself stepping inside that door again ............... RANT OVER!!!

Guy behind counter != Barry who sent the email

I'd ring Barry and tell him you're not happy and see what he says.

Waterford Cycle Centre will be happy to build that bike for you.

I had a bike made up there last week and I was very happy with the result.

I think they charge between 100-150 depending on whether it's internal or external cabling.

They are very easy to deal with it.

I recently built up my bike, similar situation to yourself.
    Mine had a BB30 bottom bracket but I went with a FSA BB30 chain-set.
Its not really that terribly difficult. When I was finished I got the guy from Thomastown (send him a text he always returns calls from my texts!)that you mentioned to check it over.
If you have time there is a nice satisfaction to doing the build your self.
I'm also from KK so if you need advice or indeed some assistance (not interested in doing a build for anyone else, only my self!) PM me.

+1 Barry and Ray are two top blokes who live for that business and of course the sport. I'm sure they wouldn't be happy knowing this is going on.
