There are a lot of farmers waiting for land to dry out and growth to take before they buy cattle. Whenever those two happen there will be a big demand for cattle for grazing.

IMV the trade has improved a good bit in the last few weeks, saw a few crazy prices again this week. Maybe its localized. The nordies were saying cattle are cheaper with them at home than travelling down south

Ya agree with bob, it has picked up a good bit in the last 2 weeks, more so for cattle over 475kg, lighter cattle are still good value. It looks to me that people don't want to buy cattle that will need to be housed next winter, animals that will be finished off grass are a better trade.

With all the losses and thin cows, I reckon there will be a bit of a scarcity in the pipeline, question is though when will it maniffest itself?

I dont know what drugs some of the lads down here are taking, but cattle prices are up in the last 2 or 3 months and are still climbing. Couldn't by a 350-400kg bullock even if you were sh1tting gold

the biggest problem lads have with that is they wont have the grass/silage/funds to hold them until then

Skibbereen mart seems to be slighty dearer than macroom or Bandon. Both of these are an hour from me, whereas Skibb is only 10 mins. Going to buy less cattle and produce more grass. Have to cut my cloth to suit my measure....

That's true I know a man selling cattle on donedeal and he had plenty callers asking him to hold the cattle for another week when the week is up and no improvement hold them for another week.

And IMV they have slipped noticeably this week down here too unless they are for forward store cattle with the potential to be finished by next October.

    But things change quickly.
A good burst of grass would quell allot of the fodder problems and hopefully build up a surplus.
Lots of lads will make extra this year, some wih the notion of making a killing on it next winter.

The one thing is prices can't be pridicted too far ahead. A good summer, more shipments abroad and the back end prices might be bearable.

Your stocking rate is averaged over the year and there is a minimum stocking rate for disadvantage area payment.
