Taxing a newly purchased car.

I recently purchased a car on April 3rd. The tax on the car was expired at the time of the purchase, and it was agreed with the garage they would pay 3 months tax on the car.

However, there have been errors in the process which means the car is still untaxed and I would like to take control of the situation myself. I have a copy of the form the garage filled out, listing my ownership from the beginning of April only, and the Vehicle Registration Certificate states this also.

On the motortax.ie website there doesn’t appear to be a way to tax the car from the beginning of April – which is the starting period of new ownership of the car. Is it possible to tax the car from the beginning of April, and if so, how do I go about this? I would assume I am not liable for the taxation period before ownership of the car.

    You need the tax book.

Then you go into your local tax office and show them the book if its in your name and ask to tax it

    or

If its still in the garages/previous owners name, tell them you want to change the name on the book and tax it at the same time. They will take the book and tax it for you.

The only way to tax online is if you were sent a reminder which provides you with a pin for online payment.

When you tax a car,its is taxed for the entire month you pay for it,whether it be the 1st or the 28th.
So you will be paying for the entire month of April.

The vehicle is in my name now - and I got the renewal letter from the Motor Tax office - but it lists the expiry of the tax on the car as Feb 28th, and I don't see a way of changing this or selecting something on the site that would allow me to tax it from April 1st. The VRC lists my ownership from April 3rd - so is it a mistake on the part of the Motor Tax office for listing my renewals as due from the 28th Feb/1st March?

I got one of those recently

It gives you the pin and says only to use it online if the date of taxation commencing is different to the renewal date (IE dont fillin the paper form)

Yes, it is a mistake on their part if they're saying the change of owner was on April 3rd. A new owner is only liable from the 1st of the month in which the ownership changes so you are not liable to pay the tax for March.

On the form you get from the tax office/garda station that isn't filled in there is a section that covers new ownership.

It does mean you have to physically go into the tax office.

not anymore, the form now means you can tax online from the month of commencing ownership

I've done this last january ('13) for a car that I bought with expired tax since 9/12
