Labours in low gear, shudders at speed

...in recent weeks when I start the car, for the first few seconds it seems really struggling. Almost as if the power is going down, not picking up. This can stay for a few seconds, car slows, and then it's almost as if a blockage is cleared, it'll pick up and work away grand.

Was on a motorway last night and noticed that at around 120km the problem seems to return, car shakes, again almost as if fuel is dirty or interrupted. This continued for full journey of a couple of hours.

Car itself is a 2004 Saab 1.9. Any ideas? Could it be serious, like an engine problem, or something to do with fuel injection?

Sorry. That'll show you how little I know about cars!

    It's a 2004 Saab 93 1.8 petrol.

I had this problem with my 1.4 Focus at the weekend. When were the plugs last changed? I noticed the car shuddering and labouring while accelerating, then had no power whatsoever in 5th gear to the point of almost cutting out. I checked the plugs and they were burnt to the nut. Check them anyway it's an easy fix if that's the issue.

If its idling hard could be a dodgy coil pack either. Also could be dirty fuel, bad fuel pump/fuel filter, sensor gone somewhere, bad air filter... There's a lot of things that can cause a car to do this. Any other symptoms?
