Hi, Has anyone done this and could you recommend the easiest route.
Had a look at xda forums but looks complicated and a lot of different ROMs so don't know which one to choose.

It's my wife's phone and it's really slow.

Well the best place to start is figuring out what firmware you're currently running. You'll find this in the 'About phone' section of settings. Post the info from that section here and we'll see where your at. The 'fastest' and most stable firmware is probably the last official firmware released by Samsung. Check if an update is available using kies.

In general the quickest way to speed a phone up is to do a factory reset (after you've backed up everything of value obviously), and avoid using apps that run constantly in the background e.g. facebook, whats app, viber etc.

If you want to go down the custom rom route, you're right there are a litany of roms to choose from, 3 years worth at this stage. The most vanilla of which and best maintained is Cyanogenmod which is currently on version 10.1. Most (not all) current roms use it as a base.

I think the easiest route for you is to update to Jellybean 4.1, Cyanogenmod is easy enough to install. You can get the very latest android version for the S1 but I've found it can be slow and laggy at times.

Take a look at these vids which basically steps you through it, first one is how to root the phone, second is how to install the android ROM. Make sure you take a back up first in case something does go wrong and you can just revert to the back up before trying again.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the replies,

I installed this ROM on Saturday night [JOP40D]_android_4.2.1_f7_oficial_stock_rom.zip-signed.zip as per vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LP9EomkF06c

And it works fine so far.

Dont know if this is the best ROM - so any advice is welcome.
    Thanks again
