Can somebody recommend a good car hire company in Berlin? The family and I (wife and two kids) are going there for ten days in July.
I have been disappointed before with sixths and Hertz, because when I book the car that I like they have "and similar" clause which more or less allows them to pass off any car that has four wheels as similar to what I had booked.
I just need something cheap this time anyway, so anything like a golf A3,Focus, or Astra and I would be happy. The cheaper the better of course any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Have a look for Euro-Mobil. You wont find them at berlin airport though. They are a car hire company owned by the volkswagen group. Most of their depots are in volkswagen or audi dealerships. If you ask for a golf or an A3, this is what you get.

I rented a Panda through Enterprise, no complaints. They even 'waved' a parking fine we got in Alexanderplatz while we went up the radio tower - the fine was smaller than the parking fee. Getting the Panda to max speed on the autobahn was hairy though :pac:

Just back from 5 days in Germany in a rented 1-series diesel auto, from www.autoeurope.com and the company providing was Thrifty.

I would say though if you've anything more than hand luggage or 2 full size suitcases that the boot is small. We ended up with part of the rear seat folded flat.

Btw I actually booked a Focus originally. By booking an auto their choices for bait & switch is greatly reduced.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Pretty much everyone has that clause.

One of the German companies you mentioned (Sixt) allows you to rent specific models e.g. BMW Mercedes and Mini.

Is anyone ever reminded of the Seinfeld car hire sketch?

RENTAL CAR AGENT: Can I help you? Name please?

JERRY: Seinfeld. I made a reservation for a mid-size, and she's a small. I'm kidding around, of course.

RENTAL CAR AGENT: Okay, let's see here.

RENTAL CAR AGENT: I'm sorry, we have no mid-size available at the moment.

JERRY: I don't understand, I made a reservation, do you have my reservation?

RENTAL CAR AGENT: Yes, we do, unfortunately we ran out of cars.

JERRY: But the reservation keeps the car here. That's why you have the reservation.

RENTAL CAR AGENT: I know why we have reservations.

JERRY: I don't think you do. If you did, I'd have a car. See, you know how to take the reservation, you just don't know how to *hold* the reservation and that's really the most important part of the reservation, the holding. Anybody can just take them.
