Do the back wheels of a VW Golf MKIV need to be aligned? My back tyre on the driver side has worn badly on the inside but there is no wear on the rest of the tyre. What could be causing this?

No they cant be aligned.I have the same prioblem on my golf but I need to get the rear axle mount bushes replaced as I notice a 'banging' noise and feel in the car when I go over a slight bump.

How are the bushes on yours?

It could be bad camber. Note that the issue can be the symptom of a problem with suspension so you could have it looked at by a mechanic.
Did you have work done on the rear done that could explain this?
Maybe bushes as said above, or something else. Without looking it's hard to guess.

I have the exact same problem with my e36, had the rear bearings replaced when I was away in Dublin. When I came back, the rear passenger tyre was really worn out. Went to one mechanic, he said its alignment, went for alignment, the alignment dude said it was the bushings!! So which one is it!?!
