I have a tractor log splitter here in the farm. I was thinking of going selling firewood next year. Have a big 10x5 trailerr with big mesh sides aswell to draw it. The only thing is that I dont have any timber on the farm to sell to people bar ourselves so was thinking can you buy it off the forrests and cut it up myself. Any one on here have ideas of prices or who to go to? Im in south cork by the way. I also have plenty of sheds to store it now and let it dry for the winter. Any advice welcome. Would €1000 get you much wood to begin with?

I was talking to a man about timber last night (I sold him a couple of trees that are dangerously leaning toward the road) and he said that Coillte run woods will not allow men in with chainsaws because a few years ago someone got hurt with one and then sued Coillte. I don't know about other woods, but be very sure of your insurance etc before you start.

i actually was thinking that I could buy them already cut down but that I could do the rest.

Approx 1500 euro for a 25 ton lorry from coillte.
You'll earn your money with a log splitter. You'll be competing with guys who have firewood processors and can saw and split 25 ton in a day. You'll be 2 weeks doing the same amount of work with the chainsaw and the log splitter. It'll be money hard earned and competition for price is fierce.

A friend of mine does it and as far as i know it hard to get hard wood which is what people want plenty soft wood going . I think its alot of work for the money you make .

I think they charge €80 for a big plastic bag on a pallet here. I think that's over priced TBH for what it is.

I had a rick of my own timber here. Twenty six 13 x 7 Gillespie tractor trailer loads with about 20" high sides and loads piled high when cut and split. In short, a lot of timber. I handled it all with a saw and log splitter. The plan was to sell it, but for what work went in I thought I was giving it away at €100 an 8 x 4 trailer load. I shedded it all and myself and the parents will use it over time. That is with my.own timber, not to mind buying it.

I paid €50 ton last nov for load of ash thinnings. 24 ton on truck €1200 for load plus €300 delivery. I think softwoods may be little cheaper. Worked out abou 50 tonne bags. (Ton bag but not ton weight)We kept all. Lot of sawing involved

i understand this. so for example your buying it for €50 a tonne. what would the tonne make then when you go on to sell it? Just roughly?

@ €60 a tonne bag roughly €120 per tonne of timber cut and split. Don't forget that's probably delivered too. All your costs, tonne bags, petrol and 2 stroke, and diesel for delivery would cost €25 imo. That leaves you €45 per tonne for all the work.

Tonne gravel bag. Timber is sold by cubic meters not tonnes. A lot of sellers fool buyers by saying they are selling half ton gravel bags of timber of course they leave out the word gravel. I know a man with his own processor and he stores his timber in sheds to cure it and he charges €35 for a big gravel bag of timber.

I thought I made this clear. Yes I understand a "ton bag" as they are known does not hold a tonne of timber or feathers etc.... They were not gravel but infact held building stone. Seen few people making a mistake thinking they were buying ton bags of turf-thinking they had a ton of turf. For op there is a good bit of work sawing 24 tons/ 1 timber lorry. It took us one day with 3 lads sawing and 3 lads bagging. Each ton of timber cut, should fit in about 2 no ton bags. (Ton bag hols about half ton timber. Prices vary but about €70 a bag sounds right when selling.

My costs were 1200 for timber 300 for truck and 300 for 3 extra guys sawing on the day.
    Total €1800
I got 51 big bags (each holding abour half ton full of timber.
At 70 euro a bag if I was going to sell on would give me €3570

Take away cost of buying empty "ton" replacement bags at €5 each= €255

    3570-1800-255 =€1515 profit.

    Allow €15 petrol for saws.

I kept alk mine. Delivery would have to be taken into account.

Maybe you could get more than 70 per cut bag. I Dont know. Mine not split yet either. So allow for that.

Around me timber is sold in "ton" bags not by cubic meter!

Never herd of it cut and sold by cubic meter...

cheers lads!...was considering buying a load of coilte to cut and selling it myself.but ye have opened my eyes!....think spending 1700 on turf plots instead would be a better option maybe?

    I
You probably will buy a load of softwood timber cheaper than ash. However the price you will get per bag could be halved. €35 to €50 for bag of softood. Plus same work involved in cutting and blocking. More work with turf. €1500 is nice profit for day or two slogging with 2 or 3 lads!
