To taper or not to taper

    Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster :)

Have been training for the Limerick marathon on the May bank holiday.

To cut a long story short, I got injured, missed 6 weeks training but after physio all good again.

Situation I find myself in is the longest I've run in training is 18 miles (done a couple of times). All the training plans I've looked at start tapering from this week on.

Because I've missed out on 20 milers should I do one this Sunday to boost confidence or should I start tapering as I should.

Any experienced marathoners have an opinion?

Don't be silly, of course you should start the taper now.

There is nothing to be gained from a 20 mile run at this late stage, you would not be able to recover fully and there are no fitness benefits to be had. it's too late for that.

Whatever training runs you missed you will have to live with. On the plus side, if you have done plenty of 18 miles runs, that is entirely sufficient to get you round the marathon course in one piece.

If you do 20 miles tomorrow I think you should have enough time to recover of course depending on your overall fitness. A training session today only benefits you after 10 days , but in your case you have over 2 weeks, im no expert but still plenty of time to recover

I prefer TFB's advice, and he is an expert.

    Thanks for all the answers.

I was thinking along the same lines as dekbhoy and thought 2 weeks would be loads of time to recover.

But I'll go with the advice given and start winding down.

Confidence on the day is crucial for a marathon ,the last few miles are a mental battle as much as a physical battle. Of course every individual is different. for DCM I did my last long run 15 days before and i ran marathon way faster than expected so ill be sticking to my tried and tested method. I'm doing limerick marathon on may bank holiday weekend and will be doing my last long run tonight (20 miles) Will taper from then on in.
    Best of luck
