What driving might you be doing, but as a first car why not the likes of a Clio, starlet, yaris, micra, 106 small easy to drive cars to get used to driving and build up a no claims.

Get something you won't mind if you kerb the wheels.

Not many cheap examples around as they tend to hold the value well, and those that are have plenty of miles on them.

Oh and tax on them is 385 per year.

You will generally get alot tidier petrol car for €1500 than diesel. Motor tax rates are available on the motortax.ie website.

Hard to find a nice yaris for €1500. Not impossible but very difficult.

Cheers everyone..so basically would 1.4 corolla be much dear to run than a 1 litre polo or corsa? Really want a corolla and the insurance is only a bit more

I'd be looking towards a Mazda 323, just as reliable as a similar Corolla imo but are cheaper to buy.

    For example:

    Don't really like the maxdas!
Out of a 1l polo or corsa or a 1.4 corolla which would be best to get? Cheapest to run and tax

Disagree ^ the Clio is a fine car.

Anyone I know who's had one had it jacked up more than actually driving it, the father had one and it was only woeful, anything that could break did, but that's just my experience, if it's looked after and all I'm sure its a decent car

The Corolla by a hundred country miles. 1500 will get you a decent example too and they are a better built higher quality car than a Mazda 323 or in fact most cars in their class.

I have never owned a Corsa or a Polo but my Corolla does over 400 miles to the fill, that's from a 50 liter tank.

it would depend on where you do most of your driving. if your doing more motorway driving the 1.4 could be more economical due to sitting at lower revs etc. Conversely a 1l would be better in more town driving.

mpg or l/100km is down to driving style of the individual and where you'll do most of it.

1997 Polo 1 liter 45 or better mpg on 80kph roads and some city driving, I've gotten 56mpg on a motorway trip measured brim to brim but keeping it under the limit to be kinder to the engine. But then again I know a granny who drives faster than me. Tax is just under €200, depreciation is probably zero.
I'm sure the Corolla is a better car all right, but maybe not quite so frugal.

OP if you are gna go for a 1L Polo you are gna get 40mpg average, they are not bad little cars just make sure the example youre buying was well looked after! 2000 to 2001/2 give alot of gearbox problems to be honest avoid if noisy! If u have your heart set on a Coralla get one, they are a fine car and thats coming from a VAG fanatic! Superior car to the Polo. However Polos more classy :p nice interior too
