I've just been reading paper and while reading I it just hit me that there are some positive things happening around the county so I've decided to start a thread to document these so that if any "outsiders" come across this forum they won't think only bad things are happening in Longford!!

    Longford Swimming club:
Longford swimming club has this past week won a number of awards including Club of the year (this is an all Ireland award), so this is something we have to be proud of even if you don't have any interest in the sport.

    Longford Cricket club
There is a new cricket club in the county and they are training Wednesday nights in Newtownforbes. Again this may not be a sport everyone has an interest in but its great to see a new sport on offer for people who do have an interest in it.

    Great idea! :)

There's also the Goldsmith International Literary Festival: http://www.goldsmithfestival.ie/

The Backstage Theatre is probably the best theatre in the Midlands. Travelling theatre groups love visiting it because of its excellent facilities and enthusiastic audiences.

Sportswise, Longford Town FC are currently sitting at the top of Division 1 of the Airtricity League. If you've never been to see a game, I highly recommened it... great atmosphere and friendly banter with other fans. The county's Under-21 Gaelic footballers also had a great run recently, and made it to the Leinster final. Unfortunately, they didn't win but they did beat Dublin along the way. Also, the local rugby club has made it to the final of the Towns Cup. :)

Believe it or not, Longford is also well known in professional dance circles as being a centre of excellence, thanks to the Shawbrook School of Dance in Legan. Dancers from all over the world travel to study there.

Just to make things easier for people that will just have a quick look to see what this thread is about will everyone use bold to highlight the main event or activity, if you could that would be cool if you don't or don't read this its no problem either :) Also the more that post event and activities the better as in a small way it might help create a positive image of the county.

    Local GAA Clubs
Longford has 24 GAA clubs, a club in each parish and they are all a credit to their parish.

    Details here: http://longford.gaa.ie/club-executive

    Soccer Clubs:
Apart from the long established League of Ireland Club, Longford Town, there are a number of soccer clubs all around the county.

    Boxing Club:
There is a local boxing club down little Water street. As far as I know and I'm open to correction, training is Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8.

    Martial Arts
There are a number of martial arts around the county.
Here is a full time facility - http://www.phoenixmartialartsassociation.com/home/
There is also a long time established WTF Taekwondo club and a number of other Karate styles that I do not know the details of.
There are two MMA clubs, one in St.Johns hall and another in the Phoenix martial arts centre.

    Triathlon club:

    Cycling club:

    Basketball Clubs:
    Torpedoes - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Longford-Torpedo-Basketball-Club/294639450546092

    Falcons - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Longford-Falcons-Basketball-Club/104640066242998

    Rugby

    Athletics club:

    https://www.facebook.com/longford.athletic.club

There are also numberous gyms and fitness facilities that are as good as anywhere in the country in my opinion.

Functional Training Ireland - a new facility that is getting great reviews and was recently in the sports section of the Sunday Independent. http://functionaltraining.ie/longford/

Longford Arms gym is as good as any other hotel gym in the country. http://www.longfordarms.ie/leisure.htm

The Mall Complex is a great public faciltiy with very reasonable gym and swimming pool rates, an indoor and outdoor basketball court, an astro turf pitch that can hold a full 11 a side match or 3 side by side 8 a side matches. The Mall also has a lovely walk and park that is free for all to use. The Mall is something that is envied by visitors to the county from far and wide and is something that the town council have created that they do actually deserve praise. http://www.longfordsportsandleisure.ie/

Longford Fitness is a fine facility at the Axis Centre at the Red Cow round about that receives great praise from all that go to it and I know that it is a place that attracts people from outside the county which is always a good sign. http://longfordfitness.com/

Longford Omniplex now showing 3D movies
Now I've tried contacting them to confirm this but none of the phone numbers I've found seem to work, however they are currently showing 'Ironman 3D' (my son & his friend went on Friday & said it was great) so I can only assume they now have the capability to show any of the new three dimensional films currently doing the rounds, sure saves on a trip over to Mullingar to watch one, hopefully its going to be a new & permanent addition to the Longford cinema experience.

    Longford Business Finder iPhone App

A new, free & nifty little piece of technology for fast finding of business services in the county.

Longford Business Finder iPhone App is a useful directory of over 1000 businesses in County Longford, Ireland. Businesses can be accessed by category and location. There is also an A-Z listing.

Thats great news, I have been guilty of going to cinemas outside the county for the sole purpose of seeing a film in 3-D, I'm sure the addition of a 3-D screen will help to increase numbers using an already great cinema.
