    Hi illikepears,

Most of the people on this forum are psychologists or counsellors. You might get a better response in Soc > Personal Issues, but you'd need to put your question into a form that PI allows. Have a look over there and see what the Forum Guidelines are.

From my own point of view, the purpose of therapy is to help people overcome their difficulties, and help them be able to live the life they would like to lead. My job is to help them with the 'how' of bringing about changes.

You might also find some information about the different kinds of psychotherapy / counselling on the website of the Irish Council for Psychotherapy, as different approaches may have different aims.
