    Please help:
I have a 4 year old PS3 and all I play is one game, Battlefield 3. I purchased the original game on disk and since then I joined “premium” which gave me access to 5 add-on packs.
I am told today it will cost €200 to fix the PS3 and he said I should buy a second hand one instead.
My question is; how do I get the stuff on my PS3 to a new one, be it a brand new one or a second hand one?
I am stupid at this stuff so please help.

Once you set up your existing PSN account on whatever ps3 you buy, your battlefield stuff will be in your download history. All you need to do is set your account up. Nice and simple :)

OK - well anything you have downloaded from the store you can re-download - at no extra cost.
Trophies - will sync automatically once you log in with the same ID.

Game saves - if you have enabled save online or online backup will be recovered.
If though you just saved to the PS3 then unless you have a backup you are sunk for these.
Not sure what is wrong with yours but if you can get it working for a while then you might have enough time to create a backup or maybe the repair shop can help you here.

Not sure I'd agree with getting a 2nd hand one - you never know a reflow - but if you do get one - get it from a reputable store and get a warranty.

    Thanks guys.

I should have mentioned that I have access to the PS3, all the menus etc. The only problem is that it doesn't play games. I got it checked out with a sony guy and he said it will cost €150 - €200 to fix, not worth it.

So I do have access to everything... only problem is that no games will work!

I wonder would downloaded games work? So I could just buy BF3 again and play it as a download. I am confused

Yup, I'd say you'd have no problem with downloaded games at all (try a free demo on the PSN store first though).

The only problem is that most full games are very expensive if they are on there. You'd also want to double check that your add-on packs are compatible with both the disc and digital versions of the game.

I think a PS3 even without disc reading ability is still pretty useful. You can use it to acces netflix, watch video files, stream from your laptop, photo view etc.

Ah - you are sorted so.

1st - sync all your trophies - select them - I think triangle and sync.
2nd - plug in an external HDD (Fat32 formatted) - and under system settings select Backup - it can take quite some time
    > or see if you can enable online backup - think you might need to be a PS+ member but not sure.
3rd - take a note of your gamer id.

    Then on the new machine
    1. create the account with the id above
    2. apply all updates
    3. trophies - just select sync
    4. plug in the HDD and system settings > restore...
    5. To redownload
    > goto the PS Store
    > go to my downloads - left hand menu near the bottom
    > scroll through the list of your purchases/downloads - select the ones you want and kick off the redownload....
Have had to do this last part quite a bit since my own went belly up a year ago.

All going well you won't even tell the difference between the two. If your original PS3 is the FAT (1st one) version - then you might get an error on the restore - just keep on going. Not all backups are compatible, think it was my PS2 gamesaves that gave me that error.

Update: might also be useful when it all works to deauthenticate your old PS3 - some games have download limits.

Sounds very expensive for a bd drive issue. Is the laser gone or is there a problem with the logic board?

I don't know what is wrong really.

I went to see about another one, WTF, only can get a 12G or 500G. Mine is a 40G

    (a) 12G is clearly pointless, &
    (b) why is the next one almost 50 times bigger!!!!...

Re the link above, I dont want 500g or free games with the stupid thing, i only play one game. Peeded off now.

Buy the 12GB console, after you have backed up your original HDD, put that into your 12GB PS3 and restore - sorted.

You may need that adapter plate but I am not sure on that - one of the others here with experience can guide you on that.

BF3 install with all maps packs/Patches are 9GB on my PS3. 12 might not be enough as i'm sure it's like other HDD amounts in that 12gb is really like 10gb or something.

I have a 320GB slim, and the actual system memory is 290GB. Just to be sure i would go with bigger memory if you want the full BF3 game on it.
