This was missed in the off topic thread so sorry, but I'll ask it here.
Since my car is an uneconomical repair, how much could I expect to get for it for scrap and anyone know a good scrapper to use (Dublin north)

    Car is a 01 9-5 2.0t

    Cheers!

    Whats wrong with it exactly?

    You can go four ways.
1 put it on donedeal and adverts and sell it cheap.
2 like 1 but sell off parts
3 take it to a breakers yard and see what they offer.
4 take it to an ELV facility. They won't pay you but you'll be rid of car.

Oil leak on side of engine. Breather filter box or some such. next to the timing chain cover. Engine out job to fix, so worth more than car.

Worth driving until it dies while keeping an eye on the oil level?

Not really, can't trust it, the leak drips onto the auxiliary belt and has already snapped one, leaving her stranded.

Done deal it in that case.

    Here's what I'd do:
Try selling the car as is and if that doesn't work ring the ELV and see if they come and take it away.
Then sell what parts you can and let ELV come and trailer the rest off.
Make sure they're ok with you cannibalising the car first.

Will the cost of getting a new car be more expensive than the cost to fix?

Best breaking it, more money that way. Turbo if its any good should command a pretty penny. Seats, wheels, panels etc even the engine might find its way to someone with the time to sort it and use again.

You'd get naff all handing it into a breakers. Well, down here anyway....

Just spotted this thread and decided to post asking for advice. A relative who emigrated left behind a 01 Hyundai Accent. Tax, NCT etc all expired and it hasn't been driven since May last year. Quite a bit of mould has built up inside, etc. so it doesn't look or smell too good. Any ideas on how to get rid of it and maybe get a few bob.

Give it a clean inside and put it on doendeal/adverts.ie with several photos.

I would get a second opinion from a SAAB expert. They normally leak from timing chain tensioner seal or top of the timing cover. The tensioner seal can be replaced in situ once to engine mount has been removed and the part is about € 10. It's just right from the top roller in the image below.

Another possibility is oil pressure sensor which is situated under the inlet manifold behind the engine. And finally the breather system itself which can also be changed with engine in place.

@samih, the advice I got came from a Saab mechanic. It can be changed in place but its 5 times easier out, apparently. Although with nothing to lose I suppose I could drop the mount off and have a goo, but according to my guy, all the hoses in the breather filter have hardened and are restricted, so will all need to be replaced too. The restriction through them is causing higher oil pressure so forcing the leak.

Yeah, go for it. The breather system should be updated with this kit as a matter of course:

    http://www.partsforsaabs.com/product_info.php?cPath=105_588&products_id=3135

This check valve often fails letting charged air from inlet manifold in the crank case, which in turn is then leading oil leaking from just about everywhere:

If the leak is with the tensioner this is the seal I mentioned earlier:

Shipping for those is about £15, I think :-)

    Hi,

In north Dublin myself and trying to see the best option on scrapping mine. The ATF centres won't collect free of charge and don't pay you anything for the car. Also if you strip it as mentioned above they charge you if any of the vital parts are missing!! There is a company in Ballyboughal that will collect free of charge and issue a COD but will not pay anthing for the car. Was offered €100 from another company but didn't really like the sound of them and would be worried that it wouldn't be disposed of properly. Have you had any luck with disposing of yours.

Worth checking with Gannons in Donabate - http://www.gannonscityrecovery.ie/index.html

They paid the highest salvage value on our written off V70 and also bought a van from a customer of mine that needed more work than it was worth, to get it road worthy again.

If they don't want to buy the car for salvage, then they are also an authorised ELV centre.

Mos Def. Worth more than the car! Ill have a look myself to try spot the leak the weekend if its dry. If I even got a couple more months out of it it would take a lot of pressure off!

To update the thread, the diagnosis came from a garage in Balbriggan that I had not used before as I did not want to risk driving it to my guy in drogheda, but with nothing to lose, I drove it up to him as a last roll of the dice before I scrapped it. Anyway, €40 for a seal and €80 labour later, and I am off to pick up Saabrina :D all fixed and ready to go.

Serves me right for not going to my guy first.
