Why or when did they stop showing the masters?
Come to think of it, they don't show the British open as well, the bloody country is golf mad and our national station won't show our great sport...
    rant over

Would you even watch the Open on RTE over the Beeb?
Waste of taxpayers money in my opinion.

In a houseful of teenage girls (steady, they're my daughters) the tv in the kitchen is a blessing over bloody made in chelsea and goerdie shores and the like, after paying the €160 for the tv licence i'd just like to know where all the golf went to, i know they're not going to show it every week but they could show the two majors they used to show...

It's not a case of RTE suddenly deciding to show or not show certain events.
If Setanta or another station bid more for the Irish rights to the event than RTE do, then Setanta get it.

RTE got a lot of sports events back in the day when they were the only Irish broadcaster so they were de facto the highest bidder even if bid pennies. That situation is now gone for ever.

I'd say the masters went when Sky came on the scene, doubt RTE have the budget to get the weekend action the way BBC do.

*Expecting Turbirdy's wages to be mentioned in T minus 10 minutes*

They've shown the Irish Open the last few years haven't they?
Can't recall 100% if they have or not.

They're obviously spending the money on something else, rather than duplicating what's already covered on BBC, to a higher standard than RTE could realistically achieve.

To be fair to them, when Match Of The Day on BBC stopped being any good, RTE took a punt that they could do a better job with the same footage, and they did.

As the previous poster says, it's a waste of money showing the same stuff that's already (pretty much) freely available, unless you're going to do a better job.

R.T.E. Sports Dept is run by rugby men.
Most of the budget goes on rugby.
Ryle Nugent is Head of Sports and is a rugby commentator.
This has been the case for a few years now

Can we watch the Lions tour then?

the football coverage is second to none, at least they're not afraid to have a go at someone unlike MOTD, i wasn't having a go at RTE but they used to show the masters every year, even the beeb only have the last two days these days and i'm not handing another €40 to sky for the sports (which i wouldn't watch anyway), not everyone in the country has the beeb and sky as well!

Cheltenham (horse racing in general I suppose ) and Champions League coverage is pretty good and RTE would not be able to compete with the likes of Sky or BBC for blanket golf coverage so I think they are right to leave them at it.

RTE are not the worst broadcaster in the world but like all things in Ireland the knockers keep hammering away.

Not an RTE employee or related in any way shape or form to RTE before anyone suggests it. I am a license payer and I choose to watch RTE if I want to and dont when I dont want to it's that simple.

    That a fact?

Staggering if so, they're getting great value out of the rest of their sports budget so.... GAA, Champs League, Soccer Internationals, English Premiership highlights, League of Ireland, Horse Racing...

Ah yes, the Rugby men... those D4 uppities... They'd never been involved in a working mans game like golf.

I don't think saying that the bbc already cover it is a realistic defence for rte not showing it.the production costs need not be very high either. I think setanta just showed the US feed with a panel of their own?
I guess they just make a judgement call that their would not be enough support in terms of viewership to justify paying out for it.
Just a guess here but I'd say the Irish open costs considerably more to stage because they film it themselves.
At least they support it, I guess it's a starting point.

Would have thought that RTE just use the feed from European Tour Productions just use their own panel / commentators

Ah, if I'm wrong fair enough. I thought I'd read somewhere that it was an Rte production but after your post there I had a quick google and didn't find anything either way tbh.

I guess my point was anyway that at least they support our own open, but more golf on RTE would be a good thing because it's far from a minority sport in this country.
