Length of time between Jury Duty summons

I did Jury Duty two years ago but did not serve on a jury. I have now received another summons. It says on it that you can be excused if you served on a jury in the past three years or attended to serve on a jury in the past three years. Does that mean that I can get myself excused this time?

nope. You were on a jury panel the last time and you did not serve on a jury ( jury duty) so I reckon it is groundhog day for you.....

Haven't you provided the answer in your post? You attended in the past three years so by the terms of that letter the way it's quoted you can be excused.

Are you sure you've quoted the numbers (of years) correctly? There wouldn't seem to me to be any point in making a distinction between the actions of (1) serving on a jury and (2) attending to serve on a jury if the number of years was the same for both.

Indeed, it says you can be excused on it, just ask them

My initial reaction to the letter was that I was eligible to be excused but then some of my friends said that I hadn't attended to serve on a jury, I attended the jury panel and was not selected. That doesn't sound right to me but I wanted to get some other opinions on it

see Section 9 of the Juries Act 1976 if you attended to serve on a jury within 3 years ending with the service of the jury summons and you can satisfy the County Registrar that you did then you are out of the loop. Apologies for my initial reaction...now I know why its so hard to populate jury panels

Correct....

9.—(1) A county registrar shall excuse any person whom he has summoned as a juror under this Act if—

(a) that person is one of the persons specified in Part II of the First Schedule and informs the county registrar of his wish to be excused, or

(b) that person shows to the satisfaction of the county registrar that he has served on a jury, or duly attended to serve on a jury, in the three years ending with the service of the summons on him, or

(c) that person shows to the satisfaction of the county registrar that, at the conclusion of a trial, a judge of any court has excused him from jury service for a period that has not terminated.

Do they keep records of this? I don't have my last summons. I know it was shortly after Easter 2011 but have no way of proving it. The week I've been called for really isn't convenient for me. Any other time I'd have just went again anyway because I would actually like to experience being on a jury.

Why on earth should anyone serve on a jury? You get no expenses. And politicians get every expense under the sun.

It's not really fair that people can't claim for expenses but I know I'd rather take the hit for my own expenses than be hit with paying more tax every month to pay for other people's expenses!
