    Hi

Just wondering if it is possible to purchase authentic medieval era coins. If so where is best to find them, roughly how much do they tend to cost and how can you ascertain their authenticity.

I would love to get an Italian Florin coin. If it is not possible to get an authentic one then any sites that sell nice replicas would be fine too.

    All the best

Find a reputable seller on ebay, one that has a bricks and mortar shop too would be better. A shop you can trace on a website. Of course you can get originals. Prices depend on the coin and condition, there's no rough price guide to such a wide area like medieval coins!

Would they really sell legitimate coins on ebay? I assumed they were all replicas/scams.

Authentification would be the big thing. Is there a specific standard/certificate of authenticity that I can obtain?

If you try ma-shops.com or vcoins.com you'll find many dealers. I don't know who you'd go to for authentication of mediaeval coins; for ancients David Sear is a recognised authority. In reality, most coins are sold without any certificate of authenticity - when you become reasonably expert, many modern fakes are easy to spot. On eBay, there are certainly some fake sellers, but your best bet is to stick to reputable dealers - in the worst case, they'll refund you if what you buy turns out to be not as advertised.

Getting David Sear to certify a coin will cost you an arm and a leg so not worth doing unless it's a valuable coin that there's any doubt about. You won't find his certificate with 100 Euro coins. Only on top of the range stuff. As you say it's up to the buyer to educate themselves on spotting forgeries of whatever type of coins they collect and only buy from reputable dealers.

Yes - not worth doing for a cheap coin - he charges $40 for the basic certification.

That's not too bad, I thought it was a lot more. I presume though you'd have to pay for registered shipping to and from him. Surely he'd have to have the coin in hand to certify it. Not that I'll ever be needing his services!
