A girl I no had to get her friend to take car to the nct as she was away on a long holiday, anyhow the friend took it in showed his licence paid the fee and the car was tested...

NCT tester calls the friend over after the test and explained he will not issue any cert until he can see the log book...the friend explained the owner is on holiday and wont be home for another 6 weeks and he was told if the log book wasnt presented within 3 days (i think he said) car will have to be tested again at the full fee...

So why did he need the log book?

Car had been tested and past before without showing it and out of the maybe 15 or tests I have been at I have never been asked for the log book.

They have to have the logbook and are supposed to ask for the log book prior the test.
This is just to certify the vehicle been tested is the right vehicle.

So imo he failed to do his job yet went ahead with it.HIS FAULT! test is passed and he should not even suggest a retest.

Well no not really. Test is not completed because the VIN hasnt been checked off the log book. So he can still not pass it.

OP get the log book and bring it down. Realistically they should have read the rules before turning up at the test centre.

And dont listen to the nonsense above either.

We're just chatting about this issue in this thread.
Get the logbook and produce it, no biggie.

How is it nonsense? The tester failed to do HIS job correctly.how does he claim the right to say the car has to be tested again at full price, all he has to do is take note of the vehicle details and compare to log book,no rocket science is it?
So im afraid your talking nonsense.

I have never ever been asked for the log book only ID and the fee and I have brought many of my families and mates cars to the test

The tester is not seeking a full test, all he wants to see is the log book. If the person had brought the log book, as required, then there wouldn't be a problem.
However if the OP does not produce the log book, then after a period a new appointment for a full retest is needed.

NCT are being pretty reasonable here, they could just have refused to test the vehicle and required a new appointment and fee. Instead they tested it and provided an opportunity to bring in the logbook another day and you are ranting about them not doing their job.

atleast by asking for the logbook you know hes doing his job properly and not cutting any corners

The owner didnt bring the log book despite ALL the documentation stating that it is required.

So yes you are talking nonsense.

So rather than the OP causing themselves undue hastle giving out about something etc. Grab the logbook, give it to the tester and walk away with the cert stress free.

On every test i do im always asked for the log book first.

So my point is as the OP had a job to do so did the tester. The tester never asked for the requirements prior to test..

Yes, this is often the case. However it doesn't mean it's ok to not bring it.

ive tested easily 15 times and had to have log book prior to test for each.

    the choices were:

1 turn the car away completely...retest required

2 test the car, and give the opportunity to drop in the VLC later

NCT choose the second one, would anyone prefer the first one?

even I don't understand why he refused to give you the cert after the test.

Maybe VIN number on the car was different to the one on NCT database?

clue...a friend of OP got her friend to take her car to the NCT..... Chinese whispers...

well it says in the opening statement that he wont issue the cert so I presume it passed. the chassis number is there on the screen when you go to test the car and if it matches, all well and good, if it doesn't match at all, the car will be driven back out and customer refunded. so if it passed I cant see why they didn't give the cert.

Well is it a requirement or not?
Ive heard of a good few cases of people having to call back with the reg cert before the new nct is released.

I have brought easily hundreds of cars for the NCT and have never had to produce the log book for any of them.

I've never once been told that a log book has to be produced to pass the test. at check in, its noted on the system whether log book has been produced or not, but it has no bearing on the outcome of the test unless there's an issue with chassis number. Don't understand why op was only given 3 days to produce it either??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Aye that is weird to limit the time to produce.

Maybe in OP's case there indeed was an issue with VIN number.

If the numbers didn't match then why test the car at all ??????

The NCT people should have asked to see the VLC before starting the test.

How could the tester know that numbers don't match before he started testing the vehicle?
