Magdelene Laundry

Does anyone know if it is possible to find out information held by the people who ran the Magdelene Laundries about the women who lived there?

I'm specifically interested in finding out information about an aunt I had who lived in the convent in Sean McDermott St in Dublin. She died there in 1970 and is buried in our family grave in Mount Jerome.

The convent had been closed since the 1990's. Is it likely that any information on former residents still exists?

    Cheers

Have you tried any of the advocacy groups for survivors of the laundries? There are probably Facebook pages with info.

    Thanks for the responses guys.

As I understand it, my aunt had an OK time there. She could have left but chose not to. I'm only interested in finding if an unverified piece of family lore is true or not. Unfortunately there's no one left alive who can answer my question. I'm not looking to take it any further than that.

I'll contact someone at one of those sites to see if it is possible to get information like that. I'll let you know how I get on.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on, thanks.

I emailed the Justice for Magdalenes website and below is the automatic reply I received. The fact that they want me to petition Taoiseach Brian Cowan has me a bit concerned that it may not be monitoring this site as much as they used to. If I hear anything back, I'll let you know.

Thank you for contacting Justice for Magdalenes. If you have an inquiry and do not receive areply within 5 business days, please e-mail us again or visit our website at www.magdalenelaundries.com foradditional contact details.

Please sign our online petition at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/leadership-needed-on-magdalene-laundriesto urge Taioseach Brian Cowen to call for State acknowledgment of itscomplicity in remanding women and children to Magdalene Laundries. We also have a direct e-mail form which canbe sent to An Taoiseach at http://www.magdalenelaundries.com/an_taoiseach.htm.

Well, I got a nice email back from Justice for Magdelenes and attached is a very helpful guide in pdf format outlining how to go about getting information from the nuns.

If you fancy a copy of the guide, please pm me.
