Well the nerves have kicked in now and I'm getting very little sleep tonight so I thought I'd set up the match thread.

This is probably the biggest derby between the two sides since the old Division 2 playoff 2nd leg in 1990, with the bottom half of the table looking like so:

    26871ea809f2d3d41a12859df6a4ed70.png?1365895714

A win for Newcastle would see them safe, while a win for Sunderland would do wonders for their chances of staying up too.

    Team news:

Newcastle - Pardew has played his cards close to his chest this week with regards to team news, but the BBC claim Santon, Colocinni and Tiote are still out with Taylor and Gouffran fit. I'd guess at them lining up like below but I'm sure the Newcastle lads on here will correct me if I'm wrong (just have a feeling one of Perch or Jonas will be told to track Sessegnon all game hence the line up):
    Krul

    Debuchy/Simpson Taylor Yanga-Mbiawa Haidara

    Perch Jonas

    Sissoko
    Cabaye
    Marveaux

    Cisse

Sunderland - Gardner is suspended, Fletcher and Cattermole are out for the season.

I think we'll line up like so:
    Mignolet

    Bardsley O'Shea Kilgallon Rose

    Larsson Colback N'Diaye Johnson

    Sessegnon

    Wickham/Graham

    Form guide:

Newcastle have been in excellent form at home recently in the Premier League, winning their last 4 and haven't lost to Sunderland at home since 2000.

Sunderland meanwhile have lost their last four games away from home in the Premier League, and have a pretty stinking record in derby games, with their last win coming in 2008.

    Prediction:

We looked to be much improved under Di Canio last weekend at Chelsea and with an extra week of training I'm hoping a manager that has a reputation for meticulous planning and work on the training ground will have come up with a strategy that will help us take something from the game, but unfortunately I feel the bookies have this one priced up correctly and having a striker in good form (and another one who only ever scores against us) along with players who can change things coming off the bench will prove to be the difference. Our midfield is also weak as piss compared to Newcastle's, and that's being very kind.

2-1 Newcastle in a scrappy game which will keep Howard Webb very busy with his cards.

Your thoughts on the game lads and lasses?

Unfortunately the only way i can see this going is us keeping it tight but losing by the odd goal,, just cant see where any goal for us is going to come from,
Did Wickham show enough against Chelsea to start this one? missed the game

    Strong looking Newcastle line-up.

    Can't wait for this!

My goodness, Niall Quinn is terrible. A tad biased as well.

    Lovely goal.

Edit: Great save! Eh, great positioning of the ball for that corner...

Where's the ref to say that the ball isn't inside the circle. Jesus Christ.

Should Niall Quinn not be on fanzone?

Black shorts, white and red striped jersey.

Black shorts, white and black striped jersey.

I'm not sure if it was ultimately the ref who made the call but they made a mistake. In these days of each team having 3 different kits, it's stupid to have teams looking this similar.

Indeed . Barnsley were made wear Crystal Palaces away kit last week as their kits were too similar .

Doesn't help us folk with the touch of colour blindness.

I can only tell the difference when the players are facing away from the camera :pac:

They don't look similar at all. It's easy to tell the difference.

I don't think that was a yellow for Taylor, too harsh of a decision, that. Was a free out regardless though.

Niall Quinn has to be the most biased commentator have ever heard...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,746 ✭✭✭TaosHum

Mackems just about deserve to be ahead at the half. Were the much better team before the goal, but Newcastle have come back into it since then and Mignolet has made some big stops.

Newcastle have to keep up the intensity they have shown since the goal if they want to get back into it.

Now Redknapp and Neville at it. Gouffran is not a dirty player. it was clear he was try to roll the ball and do a laudrup turn but Johnson just scooped it away before he could do it. Coming from ex players..... Unreal

They do look similar. Very similar. And this coming from somebody with a full colour spectrum vision.

Many people have some degree of colour blindness. I mean, there are 22 players out there. Statistically atleast one of them will be struggling......never mind the millions watching on tv.

I struggle when playing football to work out colours at times, especially not good as a keeper!

But the main colours on the top half are red for Sunderland and Black for Newcastle. I think they're fine.

Di Canio is great entertainment. Shades of Mourinho in his celebration there.

Shut up Quinn. Good goal, took a slight deflection which might have taken it away from Elliot.

F*ckin' shameful performance in such a crucial game. Bad luck doesn't get you beat 3-0 at home. This season has been a shambles. We're bloody lucky to still be in with a shout of staying up given the number of games we've managed to scrape results in. Sickening.
Mackems on the up after this. Villa looking stronger. Wigan presumably boosted by their cup run. I'm looking at our remaining games - where are the points going to come from seeing as we are so ****e away from home? Imagine if we need a result against Arsenal to stay up. Good grief.

Never in a million years did I see that coming, all I can say is wow :D

Huge win, not only in terms of us finally beating them at their ground but also in the relegation battle. 34 points now and with three homes games to come (Everton, Stoke and Southampton) and two away (Villa and Spurs) I'd expect we'll be able to scrap together enough to stay up now.

Three great goals and a top all-round performance from the lads. Mignolet was top class keeping us in it at the end of the first half, Rose the best of the defenders, Sessegnon with his best performance ever for the club and Graham lead the line superbly well.

Newcastle had a good goal ruled out but it shouldn't have even been a free-kick in the first place, on top of that we should have had two penalties and they could have had two players sent off for dangerous tackles. I felt Webb and the male assistant on the touchline beside the managers were quite poor today actually, they missed a lot.

Anyway, onwards and upwards for Sunderland hopefully. There'll be one hell of a party on Wearside tonight! Woooohoooooo!
