Well lads, the time has come where ive decided to get off me arse and buy myself my first car. Im 21 male and only have a price range of around the €1250 range give or take. I was looking at 1.4 golfs there and they seem cheap enough but the insurance boys would probably hound me. Ive a provisional licence but no driving experience only lessons.

im trying to stay away from your usual first cars like ould starlets and all.
Anyone know of any good insurers or of even some decent low litre diesel motors out there?

There's a reason people buy ould starlets to be fair.

You won't get much of a diesel car for 1250, A decent one with a low capacity diesel engine won't be got for nowhere near that budget.

You should really be aiming for small petrol cars though given your driving experience or lack of, even getting insured in one of these will probably be difficult and expensive.

Buy crappy, gain NCB, go bigger. Simple as.

Leave the €1250 diesel bangers for another day, need to know what to look for when buying one

With a budget of €1250 you will most likely get a better, cleaner petrol car than a diesel one. I've seen rough diesel cars going for more than that so you will be scraping the bottom of the diesel barrel in that price range.

sticky auld price alright, he certainly wont be getting the infamous "quick sale", but i'd be confident some young lad will buy it for that price, seller is just biding his time.

Your budget is small but as a young person your ideas are big and there is nothing wrong with that. But when it comes to driving a car nowadays practicality comes before style. Wait a while until you have the big job/salary and you can change. But for the moment if you wanna get from a to b , corolla , starlet and you won't go wrong. Forget diesel at that price would have 400k on it and be driven to the ground.;)

what about a 1.4 golf (98 or so). would insurance crucify me?

    Gay

    Sorry, I don't follow.
    You're gay?
    Starlets have gay tendencies?
Gay Byrne tells people to buy starlets?

Or are you just dipping in and out of forums with smart arse comments?

Insurance is based on location where car will be parked, yearly mileage driven, occupation, age of person insured, penalty points, which licence (and in your case, that's a learners permit ;) ) the car itself and no claims bonus. Oh, and the fact that they calculate your premium with a formula that is based on the highest they think you will pay. I'm sure I'm missing some things but I guess the only answer is: Ring around!

Oh and here is an okay diesel in my opinion: http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4605231

950 with a years NCT. It's non-turbo so it should be cheaper to insure than a TDi. That is if you're definitely set on getting a diesel. You can get a lot of car for a lot less if you check out the Bangernomics thread and want to go petrol. Ireland has this weird hard on for diesel at the moment...

If we are talking about the mk4 1998-2004 golf id avoid. The 1.4 engine in them is a soft engine.
