11 in the field, 3 in the shed, up to 14, and I'm done buying,

mart getting very busy the last 2 Saturdays and lots of farmers buying now and just getting away from my financial plan :pac:. . . I'm happy with my lot,

wish I could say the same about them now, out there in thundering down rain. .

mind you its mild at 12 degrees. ..

    just hate seeing that rain..

the first lot I bought 5 weeks ago only seen 2 days of rain up until today

ya friggen well packed up there today, weanlin sale now switched to Saturday from the Tuesday, i saw a bullock with lot No 389, i usually ask what they go up to, but i knew today would be (when im fed up go home). . so i left at 2.30. ..

its funny, supply and demand phrase,

I thought that with 390 bullocks in the mart , ud have a better chance of getting a deal than if there were say 170, but just as animal numbers go up, so does the buyers. .. its a wonder there isnt a door charge for the amount around the ring today, . . . a lot looking mind you, checking prices and what not. . but while i was looking around, i was thinking, this is my last day here this year, and thank god, some people were only starting out to stock up/buy

ya friggen well packed up there today,

Well half of them are sellers waiting to go into the box, then count up the lads 'just in for a look' and a bit of shapin' and sure your still only back to a handful of real buyers with cash in their pockets

I saw small Angus calves in Macroom today going for €50-€70 also a couple of free martin friesian heifers making €20-€30. There were also strong Hereford bull calves going over €300.

Plenty room for profit there  seems more like an expensive field ornament.

I know they were nice wide backs on them and not from fresians but I learned my lesson last march (remember those crazy prices) buying 300kg AA for 900....and selling them @550kg for 800....you wont make money unless u pay normal money for decent stock.

More than learned, no friesian heifers here this summer. Cattle were a crazy price last year so I went with the heifers. I sold a few before christmas for 1200 so they kept the average price up but I still lost money overall

Skibb mart is crazy, never seen prices like it. 400kg bullocks going for 700+with the weight. Ive decided not to buy half the animals I normally do this year. Going to grow more silage for selling.

Never saw it as bad as yest...good day for sellers though. Dont know what is driving prices as thought farmers were selling due to no feed. Normally I would expect prices to fall in that scanario but opp happens in skibb...cannot make money at 700/800 plus weight...well I cant anyway. Its funny as Macroom & bandon are never as dear.

I saw animals on thursday make 1030 around 400kgs fr's and the nearly identical animals on friday make 650  fools and there money are easily parted still. never seen such a strange scenario's in the beef trade. Change in credit terms by the marts is have a big effect on trade

chx bullock, 390kgs went for €1190. . now while he might have had a few mores bells and whistles about him, he wasnt worth €340 above my average.

also, if you pay €1190 for a 390kg bullock in march/apr. . .. from my long experience of 3 yrs in this business he will be luck to see his money back if selling next back end. . .

    or,

maybe hes buying now, holding until Autumn 2014 and hopefully sell a 600/650 kg bullock for 1500. . .

    bit of a gable, why,

    1, he paid €1190
2, predicting prices out to autumn 2013 is impossible, never mind 2014.
3, eggs in one basket, i find the more i have at least cost possible could have a better return. . . will let you know in Nov :-)

I maybe stupid saying this, but people buying houses in the boom, the more they paid, the more they lost. . . .??

end of last Oct I sold bullocks averaging 500KG, average price sold €1056

if the same happens again this year, ill be well happy.

It is like the end of the world is coming down here in west cork today, rain and wind is deadly. what are the people going to do for feed ,nothing inside or outside. lads in a bad way down here any way. only for neighbouring farmers helping each other out half the cattle would die around here .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 892 ✭✭✭grange mac

I heading back south west now to leave out my bullocks...its just wind, no major rain till wed and seeing that all hay is now gone....bit of wind & rain wont hurt them..hopefully the ground wont cut up too much. Have enough of a grass bank to keep me going & not going to buy round bales for €50.

Things very bad in skibbereen yesterday, Drinagh coop ran out of calf nuts...had to go to bantry to get some.

Things not good at all...but long range forecast looks ok bar wednesday.

Most marts not giving credit at all this year, payment on day makes it difficult, used to get a few weeks

Not a bad day this side of Cork. As grange mac says, windy but its not wet... And it's a south west wind, not the cold fcuking east wind we have gotten for the past few months...

I'd swear I could see a bit of growth in a field this morning, just looked that tiny little bit greener... It could be wishful thinking tho..

I think it's more like a mirage those lads in the Desert see.... :)

But still, I am sticking to it... :D

at least it makes it a level playing field for everyone. Not nice to be trying to buy animals against people not paying for them for weeks if not months on end
