Hi, if I disconnect and then reconnect a SATA HDD will I lose anything stored on it?

I'm asking because I want to remove a HDD from a perfectly good laptop to a broken one to determine if the source of the problem is the HDD. Once this is complete I'm going to return the HDD to its original laptop.

I'd imagine this wouldn't lead to any problems but just want to check as I don't know all that much about his sort of thing.

    Thanks
    Paul.

Windows will most certainly fail to boot if you transfer the HDD into another laptop. It may also kill the activation as this could be seen as an attempt to tamper with it.

Download a live Linux CD image, make a CD and boot from that and inspect the HDD from that. If laptop supports USB booting you could make a bootable USB key (I use http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/). Or put the disk into a caddy and attach it as an external drive to the working laptop.
