Just wondering who sits where in a courtroom, is it the same for civil and criminal cases??? What side is the plaintiff on and what side is the defendant on?

In civil cases, the plaintiff's side will sit on the left hand side of the court, the defendant's on the right. Witnesses sit to the right of the Judge (left hand side of the Court, as above).

Facing the judge; Plaintiff on the left and Defendant on the right usually.

In Dublin, the prosecution sit on the side closest to the jury. In Other places, the accuseds lawyers sits beside the jury

The accused sits opposite the jury staring them down with their cold dead eyes while the head juror introduces himself, giving enough info to let people know where he can be found.

Well when I was on a jury for a known gangster that was what happened. He shot a guy in the back and walked... He was shot himself a while later though.

Obviously not everyone who ends up facing a jury is a psycho or a gangster...just the ones who walk off after shooting people really.

    I mean "allegedly"

The Accused can sit where he likes...except on the bench and in the Jury Box

In the case where I was on the jury the accused did indeed sit opposite us. He sat there in a nice suit and started taking notes when witnesses were giving evidence. I wasn't sure if he was simply a methodical individual or if he had been told to do so to impress us by his legal team but was prepared to gave him the benefit of the doubt.

However it soon became obvious that it was a devious ploy and it backfired spectacularly because he continued 'taking notes' while the lawyers discussed procedural matters with the judge and clearly what they were talking about could not be jotted down by a layman so it immediately became clear to us that he was doodling all the way through the trial.

    Guilty m'lud.
