Porto, Portugal - city and beach!

    Hey all

We're heading to Porto, Portugal for a wedding in July and thinking of turning it into a mini-holiday. The wedding is in the centre of Porto, in Vila Nova de Gaia, and I've found a hotel to stay nearby which gives a 25% discount if booked 60 days in advance - which works out at appox €40 per night!. We were thinking of staying there either two or three days, but would really like to go to the beach for the remaining three / two.

I didn't realise that the beach is a bit of a hop from the city centre, and the prices seem to be more like €60 per night, which is a bit more than we can justify.

Would love to go to the beach (the extra days are for pure indulgence, lying in the sun and reading and swimming and nice meals), but, between the price and the distance we'd have to travel to get back to the airport, I don't know if the coast is feasible. Unless we stayed in Porto and travelled back and forth?

Would love to hear from any of you that have been in Porto. Or,even if there's anywhere along the Douro near the city centre that people go to sunbathe.

My skin hasn't felt sun in ages! I really want to make sure we get the most out of this holiday!

    Thanks. :)

There's a beach town about 45 minutes away on the luas or there is some nice little sandy coves with beach bars about 20 minute walk from the town centre. Taxis are cheap, I think Foz is the area close to the city quiet upper class with funky bars etc but close enough to stay to the city so you can stay in the city

When we were in Porto a couple of years ago we stayed in Foz do Douro which is a bit out from the city (think Clontarf to the City Centre). We really liked the area and you could easily take a taxi or bus into the city centre. The hotel has a rooftop pool and bar so it was nice when you wanted to wind down after a day's sightseeing. There is a beach nearby but we were told that it was very polluted and not to swim there. It was a quiet neighbourhood - we got the impression that it was quite posh - and there were a lot of good restaurants around.

In Porto don't miss the opportunity to do a day cruise on the Douro river - it really is spectacular. There are lots of companies offering them or your hotel can help.

    Hey

Thanks for your help! I think that the best thing to do is stay in Gaia and travel to the beach for the looooong sunny days that are DEFINITELY going to be happening! :P Foz looks good, but we're getting a really good deal with the hotel in Gaia that does the 25% discount with advance booking - it's right beside where the wedding hotel is, and looks quite nice.

Will definitely check out the Douro cruise. Can't wait - even though it's miles away!!

    Thanks again. :)
